There once was a boy, a very young boy, who you would always see with a smile attached. He would dance, and sing, write and draw, and paid no mind that he wasn’t very gifted in dance nor art. A social butterfly, you could say, as he danced around with many to his side. What a spectacle you’d see, for they danced as if conditioned. He’d smile, and dance, and hold his hand over his chest, for behind such a smile, lay true love’s death. It had been a while since his heart did beat, but he hid it behind a mask, and shuffling feet.  After time, he learned that this smiling mask, had become stuck to his face. With friends, and no free time to lose, he’d whisk away all of his worries in his little masquerade. His friends dance beside him, not a frown in sight. And over time, they would dance away, and never come back. His smile never faded, not for a instant, and almost unearthly, there was no emotion. The lose of a friend, yet he danced on, until one day, he noticed he was dancing quite alone. ‘Such an ugly place, I have found myself in.’ he thought as he made out atrocious gray walls, that had broken apart. But dance he did, this mask still pasted to his face. In the dark he’d dance, without so much as one to see.

Then, one day, quite by accident, his mask fell upon the floor, and shattered into dust. All that was left, was that unearthly smile. He quickly grabbed what was left, and in two hands, snapped it in half. He threw it on the ground, and shouted,
“This is what’s left?! This and nothing more?” And in a whirlwind of lost memories, the pile of mimicry flowed into nothingness. Enraged, he continued forward, dancing to the beat of quite a different drum. His chest was erupting, with life never before felt. His feet moved quickly, and quicker even still. ‘Go, just go, there is nothing left to lose’ he thought, and felt the floor open beneath him. Falling, alone, he screams out, not knowing what is to come. This instant felt eternal, as if his chest was about to burst open, or perhaps implode. The last image he’d seen was that damned mask, with it’s unearthly smile.

Suddenly, he felt the world stop. ‘Am I dead?’ he thought, and he opened his eyes. What a glorious sight! Not heaven, not hell, but instead beautiful light, and a sea of green. Green trees waves of green grass, and the sun poured down. However, the sight most beautiful was one quite missed. Two eyes of blue peered into his, and a smile, quite blessed, parted to say,
“Are you okay? You were falling so I caught you.” Quite bewildered, not a word in reply. “Your eyes were closed, you should be more careful. Bad things will happen, with your head in the sky.”
A rush of red came over, followed soon after by a smile, “Yes, I’m fine, thank you.” A pause, and a feeling overwhelming, one quite missed. His heart beat again, as he took a deep breath. Exhaling he said, though almost if forced, “I’m Michael, by the way. How did you-“
“James.” he said, and helped the boy up. “Where are you going?”
“I-.... I don’t really know, but I hope to find out.”
“Then come with me, and we’ll figure it out.”
And forward, together, they moved right along. No dancing, no masks, but still, a smile stuck to their faces. Together they walked slowly, to find where they belong.
