Zeus & Aphrodite
Choke me in the shallow waters
Before I get too deep.
- Emma Bunton, “What I Am”, Tin Tin Out
The air is thick. And sticky and swarming and infected with-
Bees. Needles, countless, pierces every molecule.
Mosquitoes. Scratch marks. Red patches disperse up the sleeves.
Leeches. Sucking, feeding. There’s too much blood.
There’s not enough blood.
There’s not enough oxygen.
She undoes another button. Sweat plasters the hem around her waist.
It’s all in her head. She’s delusional. She needs leave.
She tells him this.
A flash of lighting cracks the sky. She feels him in reach.
It makes her jolt. The lightning. She is convinced.
He is not.
“You always were.”
He halts just as their garments graze.
She feels a single sting.
“Same with you.”
Her airway is obstructed by air.
He sees the ivory of her blouse- too pure, too cruel...
A low rumble of thunder growls. He presses his lips to hers.
She loses her legs. And blames Zeus.
He catches her around the waist and leans into the glass.
A glimpse of the steam blurs his vision when he releases her. Warm air finds him in wisps.
His stubble is coarse beneath her hand against her cheek on her lips when she pulls him down.
He places a hand on her hip and fumbles for a button.
It snaps. [she’ll remember at the dry cleaners’]
“Not...here..” She rasps against him. This air makes her nauseous.
}{
The soil is soaked defenseless beneath her.
The grass smells like itself.
He shields her from the downpour from above.
She drowns.
