so. shaz. turns out she's pretty important in the grand scheme of things. but then, i think she's always had some significance...long before S3. so let's go back to the beginning...

This is all fascinating stuff and I'm convinced there's a lot more to Shaz.

The only thing I keep coming back to is the final analysis of Life On Mars, where the producers revealed that a lot of what looked like significant visual motifs, foreshadowing and suggestions were actually just things that looked right and had little or no broader significance. Sam was in a coma, and did off himself back in the present - they've also used that to explain all the anachronisms in the show - if you look closely you'll see modern watches, modern TV aerials and modern uPVC windows, for example - and the way that the way policing procedures are inaccurate but would seem right to someone who grew up watching The SweeneyWhich is all fine and dandy until A2A comes along. I've not missed an episode of either show since it first aired, but I haven't got the first idea what is actually happening. I do feel that there's more to Shaz - does she represent Alex's own experiences as a young WPC, or is she a manifestation of Alex's maternal feelings... and ( ... )

character-wise, sam and alex are about four years apart in age (most fans put alex at 35 in 2008 when A2A starts, meaning she'd have been born circa 1973).

i've been working my way through LOM little by little (i'd not seen it when A2A debuted over here last year) and have read up on it. i do think sam was in a coma, did re-awaken in 2006 (otherwise, he couldn't send alex his notes/tapes), and jumped off the roof to return to 1973. the big question mark is, as you say, whether or not the geniverse is real or constructed. something that comes up even more when you consider that, in LOM, sam was in every scene; but in A2A, the characters can and do act independently of alex (partly to accomodate keeley's various wardrobe changes, i believe). also, seems that when sam went back to 2006, time in 1973 stood still; when alex was shot by gene in 1982, she was in a (double) coma for three months. maybe once i finish watching LOM, things may make more sense. or not. maybe my brain will explode. ;)

Very interesting. However, there's a point about Shaz (who, I, like you, have always found VERY IMPORTANT) that you don't mention. In Series 2, when Alex occasionally is forgetting that she's from 2008, Shaz is always around whenever she's forgetting. Could Shaz have forgotten where she's from?

After tonight's ep I had a sudden 'OMG SHAZ IS FROM THE FUTURE TOO' moment - and then came and read this.

Awesome post. I am so made of mad speculation now. :) Oh, and I'd forgotten she saw the clown too!

shaz is definitely ahead of her time, IMO.

Terrific summary!

Now we're seeing a pattern emerging with the other (ie non-Alex-or-Gene) characters experiencing their 'moment', I'm quite convinced that there's more to all of the main cast than 'fictional construct'.

The interesting thing will be discovering what/who they are, and - if it turns out that they've had a similar experience to Alex - why they haven't been as aware of the duality to their existence as she (and Sam before her) has.

I think it's also interesting that so far the apparent triggers for these 'moments' are things that could be considered personal to Alex.

Shaz wanted to feel assured and confident about her future in the Met. I believe that Alex could relate to that.

Ray wanted to forgive himself for a decision he made that had damaged his father's love for him. Alex must have Daddy!issues after facing what Tim Price did to his family.

I dunno. Perhaps I'm seeing relevance where there is none to be had.

Either way -- brilliant picspam!
