Felix couldn't decide which desert was worse - Lamakan, with its excessive heat, or Suhalla, with its incessant, malevolent wind. Either way, it was hard to sleep.
In fact, the wind seemed to be getting stronger. Was that normal here? Did it always blow more at night?
At the first scream, Felix was on his feet. That definitely wasn't normal. He was up only a second after Saturos, but the latter was already sending Alex to investigate.
Within moments he was back. "It must be the girl. The soldiers are panicking, and this storm is definitely Psynergetic in nature. This could be our chance."
Saturos nodded, and began giving instructions. Menardi was to guard Kraden and Jenna, Alex was to help Saturos create more havoc among the soldiers - and Felix was to get the girl.
That was a surprise. He had expected Saturos to do that himself. A moment's thought was all it took to come up with reasons Felix might be a better choice, starting with the fact that he looked considerably more normal, but it wasn't what he expected. But he nodded and set out, creeping across the desert.
---
Oddly, right up against the central tent there was almost no wind at all. Felix supposed that was because the girl didn't want to blow herself away.
That changed when Felix tried to enter. Immediately he was pushed back by a furious gust. In response he crouched as low as he could go and spread his hands in front of him, both for friction and stability and to demonstrate his weaponlessness. The wind slackened enough that he could look up and see its source.
This was, indeed, the girl they'd been following from Tolbi. Her hair and clothes were whipping furiously in the wind, and she looked completely terrified.
Felix decided silence wasn't likely to get him any further here, so he spoke. "My name is Felix. I'm here to help. I won't let them hurt you."
He stopped, surprised that he had said that, but she hardly seemed to hear him. "Who are you? What do you want?"
Not looking away from her eyes, he answered, "I'm here to help. These winds are yours, aren't they?" At her hesitant nod, he continued, "Then you should be able to read my mind. That would tell you what you want to know more quickly than I could say it."
She blinked a couple of times, then nodded. Felix could feel her Psynergy and tried to think particularly of his mission, the Lighthouses, Alchemy. She must have been reassured by what she found in his mind, because while the wind didn't stop, or even lessen, it seemed calmer somehow.
"I'm Sheba," she said to him. "Which way is it?"
