Character history-
Thousands of years ago, the Earth and the Moon with their respective kingdoms lived in peace. The calm and handsome prince of the Earth, Endimiyon, was counseled by his four loyal Shitennou while the sometimes selfish and cold princess of the Moon had her four Senshi at her side. The prince and princess had fallen in love, though, an act which was forbidden by their kingdoms and by this act a war was started.
And in this battle, the prince perished, and the princess in her sorrow and agony unleashed all her power on the worlds, destroying the Moon Kingdom entirely and plunging the Earth in to despair.
Christmas, 2002. Tokyo, Japan, thousands of years later, a young Minako Aino stood on a roof top singing Silent Night to herself, contemplating her life. Though just barely a middle schooler, she was already rising up the pop charts with her first album Imitation. She was a cute, talented overnight success and while it left her somewhat isolated by fame she was, at least, happy to be living such an amazing dream while she still had the chance to.
But something felt like it was missing, like there was something more she was meant to be doing, and that night she found out just what it was when a white cat plushie suddenly plummeted out of the sky and landed on her face. Even stranger, it began to speak to her, introducing himself as Artemis. He explained that he wasn’t a toy (which prompted her to ask if he was a robot, or a mimicking animal like a bird) and pulled out a strange cell phone while sirens sounded somewhere near by. With a press of a button, Minako was transformed entirely in a new red, white and blue outfit with her hair suddenly blonde and a mask over her face. She was confused as hell, but Artemis said to just go along with whatever he said.
Minako agreed and followed him to a place where a robber had stopped to rest. She introduced herself as Sailor V and proceeded to fight him with mixed results. At first she was afraid of his knife, but Artemis told her that she had a blade of her own - a jeweled crescent shaped one that was small enough to fit in her pocket. She threw it and, at first believing she had missed, wound up disabling the thief when it cut through a tree branch that fell on him.
She was happy with her success and the new sense of purpose that came with it. Artemis explained that she was a Sailor Senshi and that her new mission started that Christmas day. She smiled, and thanked him for the best Christmas present ever.
Her fame as Minako Aino and Sailor V grew, though Sailor V was more infamous than anything, usually for stopping robberies and helping curb some of the growing crime that was happening in Tokyo. Between these two commitments, keeping everything secret and just generally trying to live her day to day life, it began to take a toll on her body, and one day she collapsed in the recording studio.
She was rushed to the hospital, put under tests and observation, and eventually she found out that she had a brain tumor that was slowly but surely killing her. There was an option for a potentially life-saving surgery, but the success rate for her particular kind of tumor was slim. She choose not to take it, instead devoting herself to doing as much as she could for her music and her mission in the short amount of time she had left. She kept the illness secret from everyone save for her manager, who supported her while encouraging her to keep singing as long as she could.
Some time later, a jewel thief began targeting high end jewelery stores and making off with thousands of dollars worth of merchandise. Whoever it was happened to be particularly clever, and was giving Minako difficulties when it came to catching them. She staked out a location that hadn’t been hit yet, watching as she saw two people she thought to potentially be the thieves run away from a nearby location. She had planned to stay longer, but an excited girl suddenly ran outside of the jewelery story screaming “AINO MINAKO!” loudly. Thinking she had been spotted (really it was just Usagi Tsukino freaking out that she hadn’t bought the recent album release) she fled the rooftop she was waiting on, unaware that she actually HAD been found out by some one else entirely.
Just as expected, the store was attacked by a rather effeminate magician-turned-thief named Cutey Kenkou and his three female cohorts, and while Usagi and her friends tried to defend it (as the store belonged to the mother of one of the girls) they failed rather spectacularly despite trying to emulate their idol, Sailor V. Usagi (dressed as “Sailor Rabbit”) was kidnapped and taken back to Kenkou’s hideout where she was going to be killed for the key to a jewel case that she had swallowed. Luckily for Minako, Artemis had put a tracker on that exact case before the robbery, allowing the thieves to be followed even after they left.
Just as Usagi was about to get stabbed, Minako arrived on the scene and freed the girl from the box, engaging the Kenkou’s lackeys in battle. They were easy enough to dispatch, and even Usagi got in on helping by boinking one of them on the head. Kenkou was another story entirely, though, and he wound up injuring her with a trick rose that exploded when he threw it near her. He was about to strike her down with a throwing knife when the Juuban police department (which consisted of four rather fail officers) arrived and stopped him. While he was distracted, Minako kicked the knife out of his hand, allowing Kenkou and his lackeys to be arrested.
But the case got snagged by some one else! A masked man in a cloak and tuxedo came and grabbed it, forcing her to flee after him in an attempt to stop him. Upon confronting the man, she asked who he was, only to get a vague answer of “Tuxedo Kamen”. She demanded he return the case, and the two started to battle only to be interrupted by a bright flash of light.
For a brief moment they shared of vision, of a woman in white pleading for them to find the Mystical Silver Crystal. A barrage of images assaulted their minds, of a beautiful castle on the moon, a prince and princess, and a horrible catastrophe that seemed to destroy everything.
Tuxedo Kamen panicked, saying that he had seen that vision before, and fled without another word, leaving Minako confused and disoriented. Artemis came to her, and after a moment to gather her thoughts she confessed that she remembered her past life, her mission, and her real name. She knew now what she had to do, and for the time being continuing on as Sailor V was the way to do it.
Her and Tuxedo Kamen confronted each other time and time again, and while sometimes she would succeed in keeping him from stealing whatever jewels he was going after, she was never able to catch him. All the while she continued to combat other crime, and worked on her idol career, doing what she could in the short time she knew she had.
Meanwhile rumors were starting to circulate that other Sailor Senshi had showed up in Tokyo. She wasn’t ready to reveal herself to them just yet, though, and kept to the shadows for the time being. She had enough to do with her own duties as Sailor V, and keeping an eye on the mysterious Tuxedo Kamen. The things that had happened in the flash of memories she’d had when confronting him and his actions in this time was leading her to not trust him, or to trust what he might do to the other Senshi that were beginning to appear. Especially the one named Sailor Moon who seemed to be getting infatuated with him the more times they met. And weirder still was the appearance of monsters, youma, that were taking people’s energy. The other Senshi were doing a good job of dispatching them and saving the people they tried to hurt, but it didn’t leave Minako any less concerned about why they were there and what they were doing.
One night she watched as Tuxedo Kamen ran away from where a youma had just attacked. Sailor Moon was following him, and she decided it was finally time to intervene. She warned Sailor Moon to stop following him, and to instead be wary of him and consider him an enemy. Sailor Moon disagreed, and a talking cat plush similar to Artemis asked her if she was the Moon Princess. Minako didn’t answer, and ran away from the scene before any more questions could be asked.
She found them again, after another attack, with Sailor Moon bandaging Tuxedo Kamen’s burned hand. After he had left, she addressed Sailor Moon directly, reminding her of the warning she had given. Sailor Moon insisted it couldn’t be true, that she felt something for him. Minako lamented that fate might not be so easy to change, and left again.
Later, she was holding a contest for her fans to dress up as the mascot she had designed. They would win prizes, and naturally she was going to be the judge. Just as she was arriving, though, her car’s radio began acting strange and a classical piano song started playing loudly. When she looked up outside beyond the window, she saw a strange man in a white suit and cape standing in the road. She panicked, and ordered the radio to be turned off by her driver. As soon as it was the man outside vanished. She was thoroughly frightened by the experience, but since no one else but her saw the man, her handlers worried about her health and forced her to cancel her appearance.
After that she went to London to work on new recordings. She returned home a few weeks later, unaware of most of the incidents that the other Senshi had been dealing with. Just as she was leaving the airport, she began to hear music playing from nowhere, and a truck driven by a hypnotized driver came out of nowhere, barring down on her and her chauffeur. She was just barely able to get out of the way, and while the truck was totaled she only sustained minor injuries. As a precaution she was taken to the hospital in Juban and kept under observation.
It didn’t take long for her to get restless, but when she asked her manager if she could leave he refused, claiming that her constant disappearing acts were a risk to her career. He asked her to just stay there and “be good.” She wasn’t pleased, but he laid out a stack of work for her to do while she was there, obviously hoping to keep her distracted and occupied.
Later, while she was working on new designs for her mascot, Artemis came to her and said it was time to go somewhere. She snuck out, making it seem like she was just going for a walk around the hospital. Her manager caught on, though, chasing after her while calling her name loudly. She heard him cry out in pain while trying to get away from him, and turned back to see what was wrong, only to find that two girls barely older than her were holding him back. She recognized one of the girls as Sailor Moon, or rather Usagi Tsukino, and of course Usagi instantly recognized her and blurted out her full name at the top of her lungs, getting everyone’s attention.
The manager’s assistant came and ushered all four - Minako, her manager, Usagi and her friend - back to Minako’s room while they were perused by adoring fans. Minako was less than happy with the situation, now that she was trapped inside her room with not only her manager, but the very person she had been trying so hard to avoid. She thought that Usagi knew some how that she was Sailor V, but all Usagi did was ask nervously for an autograph and proceed to ramble noisily about being such a huge Minako Aino fan. For the secret she held, Usagi was still very much a normal teenage girl. Luckily her friend, Makoto Kino, managed to calm her down long enough for the manager to say that she could get an autograph before getting sent home. The same went for Makoto, who was thankfully much more composed than the hyper Usagi.
In their haste to leave, Usagi dropped the notebook that Minako had signed. It was covered with photos of Usagi and her friends, and Minako noted to Artemis that it seemed like the girl had nothing to do with the battle against the Dark Kingdom, even if, really, she did. Artemis urged her to get going to a “Planetary Meeting” that she had been informed about earlier now that the room was empty, but suddenly she was having doubts, wondering why Usagi was Sailor Moon.
Later, she was working on the mascot edits again, or at least trying to while Artemis talked to her, asking her if she still wanted to fight. He reminded her of her mission as the Princess, regardless of what kind of person Sailor Moon was when she wasn’t taking on the enemies they were facing. Minako just quietly asked to be left alone, which Artemis did.
Her manager arrived, but there was something very wrong with him. He cornered her, and attempted to capture her, demanding to know where the Silver Crystal was. She claimed she didn’t know, but he didn’t believe her as she was supposed to be the princess. She cut herself free and kicked him in to a wall, but it wasn’t enough to disable him. She fled the room then, running through the hospital as fast as she could to get away from him.
In the hall she passed by a disguised Usagi, completely missing that the girl was there in her desire to get away from her manager. It wasn’t until she was grabbed and dragged in to a room to hide that she even realized Usagi was there. Usagi quickly changed costumes in to a Santa Claus suit and pulled Minako out inside a bag on a wooden prop sleigh that had wheels. They would have made it out, too, if Usagi hadn’t cried “Yatta!” in her excitement at nearly escaping. She was quickly chased by the youma-manager, but the two managed to get outside and hail a taxi before he caught them.
Once inside, Minako asked Usagi why she was there, and the other girl admitted she was just trying to come back to get the notebook she’d left behind. Minako asked her if she felt an odd presence from the manager, and Usagi said she didn’t, thinking that Minako was just an idol trying to escape for some time alone. Minako couldn’t tell if she was shocked or disappointed to know that the girl who was Sailor Moon couldn’t even tell when a youma was around. Usagi truly seemed more excited about the fact that she was around her favorite idol than concerned about why she was actually running.
When they got out of the cab, Minako paid and left with every intention of walking away from Usagi, but the girl kept following her. Minako tried to tell her that her manager would send her the notebook later, walking backwards and ignoring that she was coming up on a freshly painted sign. Usagi tried to warn her, but too late. She bumped in to it, marring her white sweatshirt with blue paint.
Usagi took her to a clothes shop so she could buy a replacement, and wound up trying on several different outfits in front of the girl. She was actually having fun, at least until a bunch of her fans showed up outside the shop, crowding the doors and making escape near impossible.
That’s when Usagi did something surprising. She yanked her pigtails down, put on Minako’s dirty sweatshirt and grabbed the hat off her head, disguising herself as her idol and braving the crowd in order for Minako to leave. But... there was a back door. Usagi didn’t even stick around long enough to hear that.
Still. It was a sweet gesture, for how useless it was.
Minako went to the irrigation canal to wait for Usagi, and when the girl arrived she didn’t seem the least bit perturbed that she had been chased all over the shopping district by rabid fans. In fact she was just as bouncy and excited as ever. They went to the near by Ferris wheel where Usagi admitted it actually felt great to be an idol, even for just a little while.
Usagi presented Minako with a Christmas cake slice that she had bought after getting chased all over, and Minako noted finally that Usagi had been using really formal Japanese with her. She asked her to stop, saying that they weren’t any different - Minako was no better or worse than Usagi, even if their personalities were different. Usagi admitted she really looked up to her, so it was difficult to change her speaking habits around her. Minako asked her again, if she had something better to do, but again Usagi denied that there was anything more important than being Minako’s fan.
That was when Usagi noticed they ate their cakes the same way (strawberry topping last) and the two shared a surprisingly good laugh. It felt strange to actually connect with some one, even some one who was a self admitted fan, but for the first time in years Minako actually felt like a normal teenage girl. As a way to thank Usagi for all she’d done for her that day, she began singing part of one of the new songs she was planning for the new album. Needless to say, Usagi was very excited to hear it, and Minako was surprised to be having so much fun with the other girl.
Later, though, Usagi got a call from her friends and had to leave suddenly, and though Minako feigned ignorant, she knew exactly what was going on - a youma attack. Likely her manager, too. She waited until Usagi was gone and addressed Artemis, telling him she was tired of hiding and that if the Dark Kingdom wanted the Princess so badly, she would give them just that. She transformed in to Sailor V and ran to join the others in the fight.
When she arrived, one of the Shintennou of the Dark Kingdom was there, strangling Sailor Moon while demanding to where the Princess was, and the youma had left her manager unconscious on the ground. She cut Sailor Moon, Sailor Mars and Sailor Mercury free from the youma, declaring that she had arrived. She transformed at last in to Sailor Venus, wearing a tiara and announcing herself as the Princess.
Nephrite commanded the youma to attack her, but Luna commanded the other senshi to attack the youma and protect her. Sailor Moon destroyed it, and Nephrite fled the scene before he could be confronted. Right at that moment, though, another Shintennou, Zoisite showed up and attempted to attack Sailor Venus directly. He was stopped by the sudden appearance of Tuxedo Kamen, and rather than engage the other man in battle, backed down rather quickly. Sailor Venus used his distraction to attack him first then, striking him with a beam of orange energy. He started to fade, but not without looking to Tuxedo Kamen and calling him “Master Endymion” before vanishing.
The other senshi promised to protect her from there on out, but Artemis and Sailor Venus refused, saying that there were things she needed to do as the Princess that required her to be alone. She requested instead that they protect the Earth from the monsters that had been attacking. They were unable to convince her otherwise, and they all parted ways. She stopped appearing as Sailor V after that.
Some time after new years, she returned home one night to find the shadow of a youma lurking outside her window. This wasn’t the first time she had seen one following her around, either. Artemis thought they were probably looking for the Silver Crystal, and as she was the Princess the enemy clearly thought it would be with her. She told him it was difficult, being chased like that, and they wound up leaving for a hotel in hopes of shaking the youma for a while, incidentally using a theft at her house as a distraction to make her escape. There was a concern that Sailor Moon arrived to try and get the jewels back from the thieves, but there wasn’t much she could do about it right then.
Unfortunately her troubles with the Dark Kingdom and her health was causing her cancel many of her venues and appearances. As an apology to her fans, she sent out a hand written note to the media saying she was working on her next album diligently. Thankfully her minor disappearing act seemed to be keeping the enemy off her trail for the time being. Unfortunately her condition was worsening, and not too long after her escape she fainted while taking to Artemis and was unable to be awakened at her hotel room. She recovered later, but it was obvious her time was starting to run out.
She went to a church in Juuban district later, spending some time alone inside with her thoughts. As she left, she unknowingly passed by Sailor Mars, or rather, she passed by her civilian form - Rei Hino. Minako didn’t see her right then, but after being stopped by a priest asking for help, Rei wound up following them just outside the gate where a dog was slumped on the sidewalk. The priest explained that it looked like the dog had been abandoned or was lost and it was also fatigued and sick. Minako recognized Rei then, and wondered why she was there, but she knew that for the moment Rei only knew her as Minako Aino. The dog took priority.
They took the dog inside and tended to him. He had a cold, but with their help he was going to feel better soon. The priest had to leave momentarily, but both girls offered to stay and watch the dog. Later, Rei picked up a magazine and stated that she’d met Minako before, but couldn’t remember where from, and really it was just because Minako was famous. Minako admitted it was strange, having some one not recognize her immediately, but Rei explained Usagi was a big fan and that she herself didn’t watch TV all that much.
Rei mused about an idol going to a church alone, and Minako admitted she liked going there for the solitude, to think about various things. When Rei asked what she meant, Minako didn’t elaborate. The dog’s stomach growled, and the girls laughed that if he was hungry he was probably going to be fine. Minako dug in her pockets for a treat but only came up with candy, and shared a piece with Rei instead.
All at once Rei stood and ran off with a hasty ‘excuse me’. Minako felt the faint presence of a youma in the area.
Character personality-
Minako has spent most of her teenage years in the lime light. She started her career as an idol at around 12-13 years of age and became an overnight sensation, and quite literally grew up with the attention of Japan on her at all times. And next to that, she spent a year and a half fighting crime and youma not only as the vigilante Sailor V, but masquerading as to the Princess of the Moon. Leading these complicated lives, having to keep one separate from the other while also dealing with an illness that was slowly killing her meant that Minako was far different from most teenagers her age.
Her first appearances in the series showed her as polite and kind, if not somewhat standoffish, unwilling to get close to anyone except her guardian Artemis. It wasn’t that she didn’t enjoy her career, it was more that she was living a fairly difficult double life and was unwilling to give up either at the time, even with her illness. Being a musician was important to her on a personal level, but being a Senshi was part of a greater purpose. To her, the mission was the most important thing, and even after she did begin befriending the other Senshi and fighting along side them, her focus was almost always on keeping the past life from repeating. To some extent this was also a defense mechanism - if she had these things to focus on, she couldn’t dwell on how afraid she really was of dying. To this end she was never really Minako, the teenage girl. She was always Minako Aino, the idol, or Sailor V, the crime fighter, or even Sailor Venus, decoy Princess and eventual leader of the Sailor Senshi.
Thankfully she did eventually grow up enough to realize that some of her stubbornness was unfounded. Having friends wasn’t a bad thing, being a leader didn’t mean having to focus ONLY on the past, and she could take chances beyond the life she had been living and actually let herself be Minako once in a while. Unfortunately it was her decision to try the risky surgery that ended her life prematurely, but her return to life thanks to Usagi (and the return of her memories after they were able to bring Usagi back from her own sacrifice to save them) meant that she didn’t lose these lessons, and the Minako Aino that grew up after that learned to be much more easy going, even taking time out her busy schedule every once in a while to go and see her friends. Being able to focus completely on her career and no longer having to worry about being a Senshi has helped that tremendously.
So at eighteen, Minako is still somewhat serious, but a kind, gentle girl with an open heart and a giving nature and good friend who can still act like an actual teenager. She’s a very independent person, willing to work hard towards her goals. Her time as a Senshi has made her resourceful and she often adapts to change and difficult situations better that most people her age. Being on her own is nothing she’s not used to, and she’s not likely to sulk about it or even be all that upset. It’s not that she sees it as a challenge, but that she’s gotten so used to it that she thinks dwelling on what’s happened is pointless. She still has a bit of a stubborn streak, and can be a little demanding at times, but she’s never cruel or callous about it. Sadness is rarely seen with her, and is probably one of the few things she’s still willing to hide while telling people she’s alright even if she really isn’t. She does, however, bounce back from upsetting things fairly quickly as, again, she sees no point in getting dragged down by things she can’t change.
She still loves music, and her career, and she hopes to continue bringing her music to the public for as long as she possibly can. Minako Aino is no longer a mask for the public, it is who she truly is and who she really wants to be.
Digimon personality-
Character abilities-
Since Minako is taken right before the power of the transformation bracelets is disolved, she still has the ability to transform in to Sailor Venus, and in this form she has the following powers:
- Venus Love Beam: A straight shot of orange energy at the enemy that disables and can often wound badly.
- Venus Love-me chain: A chain made of the same orange energy that is slightly stronger. This chain is actually a belt at her waist that can also be used as a block or a shield against close up attacks.
- Rolling Heart Vibration: Energy in the shape of orange hearts forms at her chest and flies out in a powerful blast. A bit more powerful than the previous three attacks.
She also has the Sailor Tambourine in this form, which can shoot a beam of orange light, and has the ability to change in to a single sword called Ken (けん) that, while having no straight power of its own, does enhance her abilities some and gives her a physical weapon in battle.
In the Digital World, none of these powers or attacks would have much affect against Digimon higher than Adult level.
She also still has the ability to use the Sailor V disguise and with it has the Crescent Moon Cutter that appears to be strong enough to cut through even metal (though it would take a pretty spectacular throw to do actual mortal damage to some one, even a Digimon) and is small enough to carry around in her pocket.
She’s gained some fighting skills with her time as Sailor V/Sailor Venus (though like many of the girls she has no true “style” to speak of, but she can apparently kick an enemy hard enough in to a wall to break it) and can hold her own in most fights even if she doesn’t always win.
Should the other Senshi wind up there, she can sometimes physically feel when something has happened to them, though it usually has to be something very wrong, like being in enough trouble that they can’t get out of it alone or being injured to the point of hospitalization. She can also sense oncoming danger to a small degree, though her sense isn’t as strong as Rei’s is.
Minako is also a very good singer, song writer, and performer and appears to have several other skills like graphic design and art.
