Today has been one of those days. A self-imposed fuzzy day. When you forget the little things: bringing writing utensils to class, telling the bon worker that you don't want mayonnaise on both slices of bread, leaving for class ten minutes early

I am completely in love with Sarah Kane. I discovered her through a theatre professor while studying in London. He posted a list of playwrights and we were to randomly select a name from the list, reasearch their work, and then present our research to the class.
I picked Sarah. Before Sarah I thought little of theatre, to be honest. But after I purchased a copy of her complete plays I fell head over heels in love for her writing and the boundaries she broke in theatre.
I love all of her work, but Crave is by far my favorite piece. The monologue on love recited by A is the most beautiful and honest thing I have ever encountered.
I think that's the thing that I love most about Sarah's writing. The honesty. She wrote about the things we are petrified to speak of. To even think of....
Sorry, I'm ranting about this. From the moment I picked up her works, Sarah Kane has become a part of me, crazy as that sounds. If you would like to chat further, please feel free to comment here, or e-mail me at jessknozall@hotmail.com

Crave to me is really interesting, yet so much harder to deconstruct (hence, leaving it out of my paper topic and focusing on her more linear work), and I agree with you about A's monologue. It's heartbreaking and Kane has the rare talent of forcing you to think of a person as a whole ambiguious being. I.E. almost makes you want to sympathize with the antagonist often.
I'm really more interested in the stereotypes she defies in her first three works however. At least that is what my paper will be on. The notion first occured to me when I really thought about the part of the Soldier in Blasted. How romantically a solider is idealized as a hero of sorts, and instead she turns him into sort of a psychotic killer. Also, Hippolytus in Phaedra's Love goes without saying.
