I'm normally using just one crutch but will be taking two because mud. I've bought cheap shiny green crutches and duct-taped fairy lights to them!

Presumably you also have a vast collection of rubber bands and plastic bags? If not, acquire one now! (Much much easier to remove bag from crutch and bin it when entering tent than to attempt to clean crutch of mud.)

I had considered that, but assumed that placcy bags would have a serious grip-lessening effect. If you recommend it though, I shall stock up. Thanks!

On dry/damp grass, skip the bags. If the ground is moderately-to-fairly muddy, the bags - IME - are easier than not. If it turns into the Somme, then yes, it'll be slippy whatever you do. :)
