As mentioned a while ago,
davefish asked
mrph and I to write reviews of the bands at Whitby. Our words and the Fishy One's pictures are now available on
The Independent Voice. You should go and marvel at his lovely pictures. All the good reviews are written by Mrph and all the inferior ones by me :)
While writing the reviews a couple of weeks back, I was experimenting with a new Getting Stuff Done method. Every hour, I set my alarm to go off at quarter to, and on, the hour. So I'd write for 45 minutes[*], then jump up when the alarm went, crank up the music, and run around tidying up for 15 minutes.
Ordinarily my approach to housework music is upbeat, sing-along pop (although traditionally I recommend Oasis as vacuuming music, since you can't hear it). This time I experimented with listening to Creaming Jesus. It's not exactly upbeat, but the motivation comes chiefly from the fear that if you don't knuckle down and scrub the toilet Andy Heintz might scream at you more.
Anyway, the 45/15 idea - which is, of course, an adaptation of the very fine advice from the people at
UFYH - worked remarkably well. I may adopt it again in the future, as it's an excellent way of keeping track of passing time and making sure you don't work indefinitely on one thing.
[*] Or more accurately, stare at the screen and be very aware that I'm very out of practice at writing proper reviews for 45 minutes.
