Writer's Block: Words that you love and hate

Jun 11, 2007 22:23

What are your favorite and least favorite words? Any reasons why?

So asks LJ to save us all from writer's block.

Well, I dislike ambiguous words like: nice, happy, sad.  Partially because I was trained to find them distasteful.  Granted, I use them from time to time, but I try to avoid their usage.

I love highly descriptive words.  To contrast the above words: pleasant, pleasing, joyous, excited, estatic, amused, depressed, weary, dejected, morose.

That's one of the things I love about reading, especially classics (besides the fact that reading those sorts of books tends to improve my own writing, which Dr. Brewer would love to see).  Descriptive words paint such a vivid, vibrant image of our emotions, the world around us, the world within us.

"...charm, wheedle, cajole the playwright..."

Apologies.  We're currently watching The Tony Awards, and the presenter employed that phrase.  Itsn't it impressive?  And those verbs are all ones with which the general public is familiar.

Dear World,

Can we please return to speech fluid with vivacious imagery and powerful application of our verbose language?

words, writer's block
