He could remember his previous lifetime; the ‘mortal’ lifetime he had lived before becoming Michael Hunter. His name was Raphael Lucas, and it was June of 1984. He had been a freelance detective at the time, taking in the occasional odd job while largely enjoying the lull of calmness that had encompassed his life for the past decade. All it would take was a Sunday drive to change all of it. While it was nothing so dramatic as a crash, it was nothing but cataclysmic to him.
The first cords of the song immediately caught his attention, if only because its simplicity was so haunting. It was already different from anything else he heard, in this era of post-disco revolution. A simple piano, a simple tune.
Then came the voice. The very words somehow channeled every single thought he had ever felt, without ever really knowing that was the thoughts he had in the first place.
Pulling over to the side of the road, his hands shook as he raised the volume.
So take a look at me now, oh there's just an empty space
And there's nothing left here to remind me,
Just the memory of your face
Ooh take a look at me now, well there's just an empty space
And you coming back to me is against all odds and that's what I've got to face
How on earth could a mortal man have such a way with words? How could a mortal man carry so much pain and truth behind so few words? And why did they strike Gabriel so deeply that it felt like a stake to the heart? Like so many in the world, the words rang true somewhere deep inside. In his case, it made him realize something that he had never allowed himself to think. He had spent his life looking over his shoulder, waiting for her to walk back into his life just has suddenly as she had walked out of it.It took a song to make him realize it was never going to happen that way.
That same night, Raphael Lucas' life would come to an end. If there was any chance that he would be able to see her again, it would not be because she would seek him out. If he were her, he would have thought himself dead centuries ago. The only way he would see her again if he found her. He moved to Italy and began the search in the very place where he had last seen her. It was the ultimate needle in a haystack, as over a thousand years had passed since they last stood upon this very place, but he had nowhere else to start. But he was willing to take the time.
As the song had said, it was a chance he had to take.
