So I just watched the extended season 6 trailer for Supernatural. Once I got past Jared Padalecki's abs I started thinking...
I'm calling shape shifter/ghoul.
If monsters really are able to do things they haven't normally done before, I don't see why Ghouls can't be impersonating the Campbells as well as Sam even though they haven't eaten them, at least not Sam unless they dug the body up out of the devil-box which is doubtful. They also may be able to pass the tests they couldn't before, which means they can trick Dean.
Plus in season 3 Sam did take Ruby's advice and research his mothers 'friends'. Sam said more than one person's name that ended in Campbell and he said they were all dead. It's not inconceivable that he did find a Christian and Gwen, but they were already deceased.
Of course ghouls and shape shifters might also explain the reappearance of Azazel.
Because I mean really, if you want lull Dean Winchester into a false sense of security, your best bet is family. If you want to shake him up bring in the demon that destroyed his family.
That trailer especially tried to highlight evil/creepy Sam. So maybe Sam and the Campbells are impersonators for a nice little chunk of the season. But they've also said repeatedly that 'nothing is as it seems'. So is Sam/Campbells really evil? Or are they just try to make them look that way when they really aren't.
My theory is that maybe these ghouls/shape shifters decide to go after Dean to hurt Sam, who really is alive, or just to hurt Dean because they can. Sam might show up to save Dean and Lisa and Ben from the impostors.
All I know, is that I'm excited. I'm going to have so much fun watching the season premiere with my brother.
