Title: Tangled Web (1/1)
Author: Leigh, aka leigh_adams
Characters: Cedric Diggory/Penelope Clearwater, Julian Vaisey/Astoria Greengrass
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 500
Summary: Julian and Penelope's relationship has always been painful. But they never meant to inflict that pain on the ones they cared about.
Author's Notes: This was written for this week's offering at hp_humpdrabbles using the prompt Almost Lover by A Fine Frenzy. All of these characters are played at the RPG pinksheep_wench. Julian is a semi-OC, played by me, Astoria is played by elle_blessing, Penelope is played by fiery_flamingo, and Cedric is played by numbaby. I'm glad these ladies don't come after me with a torch and pitchfork for butchering their characters...

Cedric was everything she was supposed to want. He was kind, handsome, funny, and modest-the last trait was a refreshing change after Penelope's last 'relationship.' He actually knew how to smile- not smirk-and he never seemed to mind that she had two children by another man. In fact, he seemed to enjoy it. He could handle the twins with a practiced ease she'd only seen one other man have before.

Goodbye, my almost lover
Goodbye, my hopeless dream

When his hands slid along her skin and his lips pressed against hers, she wanted to cry with happiness. She and Cedric actually made love; they didn't tear each other's clothes in an fit of passion, didn't bite and claw at the other in an attempt to leave angry red marks. His touch was tender, reverent, everything she wanted in a man.

Almost.

She didn't want to hurt him. He could have been The One-and the ring she'd found in his bedside drawer spoke volumes to that fact. But the truth of the matter was, her heart wasn't hers to give to him. Not anymore. No matter how much she loved Cedric-her kind, sweet Hufflepuff-part of her heart would always belong to Julian.

It wasn't fair.

I'm trying not to think about you
Can't you just let me be?

Astoria should have known better.

She'd told herself that time and time again. Getting involved with a man with as much baggage as Julian Vaisey was a recipe for heartache. After the flaming messes of her early twenties, she had resolved to stay strong and hold out for a man who truly appreciated her and not just her body.

But Julian was relentless. He'd slowly, methodically pursued her until she'd finally given in. 'Just one date,' she had thought. One date had turned into another, and then another, until she'd eventually given herself to him. Finally, she could see why so many other women had fallen into his bed.

Her soft cry mingled with the sounds of skin slapping against skin, melding into a moan when his lips sucked the sensitive spot below her ear. How had he known all the places she loved to be touched? His hands were everywhere-running up and down her sides, cupping her breasts, dipping between her legs to pull at the tiny nub there. In that moment, she was utterly lost to him.

So long, my luckless romance
My back is turned on you

She had known falling in love with him was a bad idea. He was a single father, and the mother of his children was one of her brother's close friends. He'd been tried for ailhotsy trafficking, only escaping on a mere technicality. She knew he cared about her, even if he wasn't overly expressive about his feelings.

But she saw the lingering looks when Penelope was near. He wouldn't admit it, but he'd once loved her. And she would always be part of his life, thanks to the twins.

So she said goodbye. Leaving him was easier than fighting for him.

Should have known you'd bring me heartache
Almost lovers always do
