Title: Crup Tails (1/1)

Word Count: 396
Summary: Draco expresses his thanks to Pansy.
Author's Notes: This was written for dmpp_ldws. I placed next to last, which is totally not surprising given how fast and loose I played with the prompt.

There were many things that Draco didn't like. He didn't like when Dobby told Mother that he didn't eat his vegetables because that meant he didn't get any tarte for dessert. He didn't like his French or Latin tutors because they were old, mean and smelled funny.

And he certainly didn't like dance lessons.

Mother had insisted upon them. She said that as a Black and Malfoy man- man, not boy- he had to observe the social niceties, whatever they were. They couldn’t be very nice, though, if he was supposed to dance like a stupid girl. Sugar, spice, and everything nice. That's what little girls are made of, his mother had told him once. Snakes and snails and crup tails, that's what little boys are made of.

Draco preferred being a little snake, and while snails were fun to feed to the peacocks, they weren't as neat as his father's crups.

At least today he was partnered with Pansy. She wasn't too bad, for a girl. She didn't giggle all the time like Daphne or Tracey, and she wasn't stupid like Crabbe and Goyle. She did wear an awful lot of pink, and Draco didn't like pink. Pink was for sissies.

"One, two, three, one, two, three," their dance instructor droned as the three-fourths meter of the waltz radiated out from the gramophone. Every time his back turned to the mothers lined on the wall, Draco's pleasant face slipped into a mighty scowl. This was stupid.

"What's wrong with you?" Pansy asked, quirking her head to the side.

Draco leveled a look at her that said duh. "Dancing's for girls," he informed her.

"I'm a girl."

"That's why you like it," was his obvious reply. "Girls like dancing and boys don’t."

Brow furrowing, Pansy started to reply, but she was cut off as the music ended.

"Now, you express your gratitude to your partner with a curtsy or bow," the instructor said.

That wasn't how Father expressed his thanks to Mother, though. After he gave a bob of his head to Pansy, he stepped forward and gave her a kiss- just like Father.

He hadn't expected Pansy to scream and push him backwards onto his bottom. Hot tears welled up in his eyes, and he could hear both mothers sputtering in shock as Pansy continued to wail.

Draco was right; dancing- and kissing- were stupid.
