Fun links!
Atheist Who Ran For California State Legislature Reltes His Views The intended 'Atheist Lobby' is political. That link provides a coherent analysis of possibility on the ground. Also some interesting comparisons to the 'gay movement' 's (hot anal? attentively oral?) penetration into the political scene. Including the use of 'stealth' candidates.
Interesting ideas, I think. Although to my original ideas credit, a lobby does not necessarily need to be "reasonable" or "electable" to suceed. It simply uses bribrey and the threat of smear campaigns to twist and cajole politicians into dishonestly adopting your position. :)
Jack Parsons, Rocket Scientist, Friend of Crowley, and Antichrist Contender An inspiring tale that your totally bizarre personal/psychological practices, which you in no way conceal, need not conflict with your other sucesses. If Parsons can have occult orgies with crowley while being a chemist, and according to von Braun(!) the "father of modern rocketry" -- then I can keep my bombastic atheism, Occult Lite(tm) flavoring, rhetoric of mass murder, and general Nietzschean megalomania while being a Neuroscientist or whatnot.
In fact, I can even crank it up a few notches!
I think because of the general lack of "amazing" success of my friends, those two Wiccans at Wendy's, the losers at Coffee Shops, and various Hippies who didn't seem to take any "relevant" major (not sure) -- I have received the strong impression that batshit ideas clashed with success.
Perhaps Philosophy professors, artists, writers, and social-workers could keep theirs - but scientific fields would be off-limits. As if even the most brilliant of people must make concessions to their beliefs if they want to participate in post-college society.
But HAH! FUCK YOU SOCIETY! JACK PARSONS, BITCH!
Charlie: ::titrates 'nerve serum' into a vial:: DEATH IS A DOORWAY.
Lab Assistant: I will place that in the centrifuge.
Charlie: Finish up quick, I fertilized some embryos that we can devour for their nourishing life-essence.
Lab Assistant: Cool. You sure you don't want to go to the strip club tonight?
Charlie: No thanks.
Also rotten.com has some amazingly coherent overviews! I found no direct link to their library, so just click on the categories at the top of the Parsons page. Their treatment of 'Magic' and 'Spells' was astonishingly the most concise, broad, and understandable I had ever read. I guess it's not just morgue pictures after all!
Oh and the best 'news' site ever:
The Daily Howler It takes some getting used to the repitition of 'howlers' in a given week. [They are really retreatments with new information.] And the fixation with the 1999-2000 'War Against Gore' is fierce. [I am pretty convinced it happened now.] Nevertheless, it is a top-notch site. It basically shows that common sense, Lexis-Nexis, and straight-talk produce information quality far in excess to anything else. (Newspapers, Blogs, Radio, TV...)
(I still stand by the Washington Post, but I read the Daily Howler every day. I am also warming to The Guardian out of UK. They use post-high-school language and light humor! What a relief!)
If the 'howlers' of the day are boring, or seem like the usual liberal media bitching, skim around the archives. There are some real gems of real reporting. Politicians and "multi-million dollar TV personalities" lie to you. There is proof.
Also "Mediamatters.org" is cool, but nothing like The Howler.
Edit: Jesus. I suck at HTML.
Edit2: A lot.
Edit3: I can't use 'angle brackets' to connote action, like in a play. Instead I have to use the faggy "AOL chat room"-type double colon. ::splits open chest to reveal laser array:: ::sighs::
