This one is an oldie so hold your femminist comment when you read that the man walks, the woman "follows" him. They are both okay with it, mind your business! XP
A man sings about how he'll create a love nest with the woman he chose (he takes her away, the two leave to start a life elsewhere) and how they'll endure life's hardships and persist together as a hard-working couple by dividing chores - he will got to work while she will do her best at household? I like to imagine she had the choice to work if she wanted to but that's what they decided to do together. They'll go on like this, until one day she'll tell him that she's pregnat and he'll go crazy with joy. The theme of walking while undergoing hardships and be rewarded at the end has a kind of biblical note, I think. It is reinforced by the word "angels".
One the other hand, it might also be interpreted darkly....a disturbing description of a kidnapper who is a traveller (a gipsy?) who got obsessed with his victim and raped her just to get her pregnant and gain an offspring... (that's why he reassures "you shall not be afraid where I'll take you") Brr. I much prefer the first version! Don't ever think the writer intended to sound this creepy in the 70s.
