yeah. 13. i'd do 666, but there's no way that many good albums came out this year.
1)Baroness - The Red Album
fuck yeah. seriously. this album is ridiculously fucking groovy. and i love it. so fuckin many good grooves, either southern rock or otherwise.
2) Dying Fetus - War of Attrition
i didn't think this band could get any more intense. fuck. did you?
3) Dimmu Borgir - In Sorte diaboli
i'm gonna catch shit for this one. i already know it. i don't really care, though. this album continues in dimmu's return to BM form quite nicely. over-the-top melodic, and with the most satanic music videos i've ever seen get recognition. good fuckin job boys.
4) Mayhem - Ordo Ad Chao
Attila, thank you for rejoining mayhem. hellhammer, thank you for not mixing your drums. this album is necro as fuck (which makes for a nice contrast from their last album). Maybe the darkest and most depressing black metal album of all time, blasphemer's guitars just make a wall of depression that's treble-y enough to make your ears bleed. fuck yes.
5)OM - Pilgrimage
okay. post-sleep band that's not high on fire. sounds great, right? well, it is. and on their second(?) album, this two-some (al and chris from sleep. no guitars...and it WORKS) summons the sleeping ghost of Black Sabbath (poor fucking "heaven and hell") better than anyone. the amount of THC in my veins jumps every time i hear it.
6) Behemoth - The Apostasy
fucking brutal. if nile started playing black metal? or if behemoth started playing death metal? anyway, this transition started a few years back and at this point is just fucking ridiculous.
7)Cephalic Carnage - Xenosapien
intense grind band got even more technical and matured the slightest bit (though not too much...it IS grind). fucking great.
8) SUNN O))) and Boris collaboration
SUNN and boris. need I say more?
9) The Fucking Champs - IV
instrumental metal at its fucking best. catchy-as-shit guitar hooks and just an all-around happy sound, while still being metal. FUCK YEAH!
10) Dark Tranquility - Fiction
glad to hear there's a gothenburg band still playing it right. it's slaughter of the soul with keyboards. sweet!
11) Down III
this should probably be near the top of my list, but i'm too lazy to fix that now.
12) Exodus - The Atrocity Exhibition: Exhibit A
thrash metal gods exodus, with added members from Testament and Slayer. there is no bad here. only badASS!
13) Municipal Waste - The Art of Partying
the waste's third album is definitely one of my top 5 from this year. crossover thrash that's probably the most intense thing since Vio-Lence. seriously. too bad i'm too lazy to move it up on my list.
honorable mention to "genesis" and "minus the heard". but definitely not quite on the list.
SHAME TO DARKEST HOUR AND VITAL REMAINS. WHAT THE FUCK WERE YOU THINKING?! YOUR ALBUMS THIS YEAR WERE HUGE DISAPPOINTMENTS!
that's my wrap-up.
