It was at least 45C today. NOT OKAY. I gave up after a few hours when the words of my book stopped making sense and just lay on my bed with a damp towel draped over me. A couple of hours later Mum came in and said, 'Get up, there's a breeze outside! A cool breeze!' And there was and there is and it's wonderful but it's still going to be 40something tomorrow and I have a migraine from the heat and I've run out of the miraculous Zomig, having taken the last one last night.
It was almost that hot yesterday but we escaped for a few hours into an air-conditioned cinema to see The Last Jedi (after a solid fifteen minutes of ads followed by only two trailers. But one was Black Panther so that was good.) We enjoyed it a lot. There were a lot of funny moments to leaven a story that showed the cost of resistance, that not all heroes agree and not everything works out. And I can understand how that would piss people off but it is the middle film of the trilogy and if you have everything work out, what's left?
(I did my best to avoid spoilers but I picked up that were strong and differing opinions and lot of people pissed about Luke.)
Everyone in the theatre was laughing at the opening scene between Hux and Poe.
I could understand Luke having a moment of fear, despair, desperation - had he created the next Darth Vader? What should he do? - and a great part of the tragedy of Luke and Ben is that that moment did help create Kylo Ren.
Ren has zero idea how to talk to a girl.
I loved Rey's compassion and the limits to it. She wasn't going to set herself on fire to save a man who refused to change. My reaction to the Rey/Kylo storyline was
basically this so I was startled to look at fic for the film and realise how much Rylo there is. Yes, it was a bounty for shippers but ... no.
Rey and Finn's reunion was sunshine. (Or possibly rain and a cool breeze.)
I didn't think Poe was ooc exactly (ooc for our headcanons, yes) but he did seem kind of manic through the film, like he didn't want to stop, slow down, think, at all, which was interesting.
He and Holdo both fucked up with communicating. He was being pushy and Holdo wasn't Leia but clearly people did need to know there was some kind of plan or the others wouldn't have been willing to help.
The puffin!Porgs were ridiculous and hilarious and will be the bane of Chewie's existence. They have eyes like Puss in Boots.
I love the crystal critters and all the imagery from that planet.
Rose!
I'm so glad R2 got to swear at Luke.
Whoever come up with those seacows and the milk scene is VERY WRONG IN THE HEAD.
In the silence with Holdo and the dreadnought(?) the little kid in front of me whispered, 'Awesome.' I loved that.
Luke would cut his hair and don clean fabulous robes for his Big Moment - but not really. Hah. Leia, you're not the only one who's changed your hair.
BB-8! BB-8! BB-8! BB-8! BB-8! BB-8! BB-8! BB-8!
Finn has had so little experience of the world. I wish he and Rey could just go off and explore it for a while.
