The gentle art of swimming...

[continued from here]

What on earth had possessed her to agree to go swimming with Marcus?   As if she wasn't self-conscious enough about her appearance, now she was going to add a swimming costume to it?!?  Still, she'd agreed, mostly because she really did wish to spend more time with him, as always.   There was also the fact that he hadn't ( Read more... )

Marcus hadn't had a lot of luck with the clothesbox, at first it was determined to give him woollen jumpers and winter coats (one of which he took just in case), and when he was finally able to convince the box that he needed something for swimming the options hadn't really gotten any more attractive.

He knew that he was running out of time, and with a sigh took the best of what was on offer. He also found a truly horrible towel, and had grabbed some water, fruit, a couple of the sugar cookies and sunscreen from the compound on his way out.

Returning to his hut, he packed his bag and quickly changed. He emerged a couple of minutes later wearing green swim shorts, a (thankfully) plain singlet top and some questionable footwear. He felt ridiculous, and he was wearing quite a bit less clothing than he was generally comfortable with ( ... )

Evey raised both eyebrows at the rather interesting outfit Marcus had ended up with. She did not laugh at all, though she had to admit she was a bit tempted. It would have been rude, though, and honestly she'd seen worse on others.

"I wasn't going to say anything," she defended herself. "That's not as bad as it could be, you know. I have seen worse."

"I cant imagine what could be worse." he said with a grin. "Perhaps next time I'll try bribery."

"I don't think you want to imagine what could be worse," she replied gravely, slipping on her sandals and picking up her mesh bag, then closing the door and beginning to walk with him to the waterfall.

"Bribery may work. The problem is finding something to bribe it with. You wouldn't want to give up any of the clothes you brought with you, after all."

"No, I wont be giving up my uniform any time soon." Or ever, actually. A lot of how Marcus saw himself was wrapped up in that uniform, even if he never wore it again he'd not let it go. "I wonder what a seemingly sentient box might want?" he pondered, almost serious.

"I haven't a clue," she chuckled. "I've considered giving it the garments I arrived with, but I don't think it would want them. They were fairly low-quality. It might consider them a poor sacrifice, and who knows what it might do if it thought it was being mocked?"

She slipped her hand into his as they walked, just because.

He smiled to himself when he felt Evey take his hand. "You're right, it seems that it's not worth the risk. Back to the drawing board." He thought for a moment as they walked.

"I'm not sure it's really something you need to worry about," he said teasing gently "the clothesbox seems to like you."

She looked up at him dubiously. "You haven't seen half the things it comes up with, mostly because I throw them back. You also haven't seen my swimming costume, which looks a bit like someone's wallpaper...or possibly a couch."

Marcus raised an eyebrow very slightly, indulging for a moment in picturing Evey in a swimming costume. "Something to look forward to, then."

She raised the other eyebrow at him. Why on earth would he be looking forward to a swimming costume that looked like wallpaper. "You're a bit odd sometimes, you know."

"I hope you remembered suncream. I have some in my bag if you didn't," she offered. "I got a horrible sunburn soon after I got here. I'll never do that again."

"It's been mentioned in the past. I prefer 'imaginative'." he said, laughing.

"I do have some sunscreen, thank you. I'm far too pale to be anywhere on the island without it."

She chuckled. "Oh good. One of the clues for noticing the new arrivals from more temperate climates is that they tend to be very pink at least once. I'm not sure you come from a truly temperate climate though, since a space station would have artificial climate controls, wouldn't it? Otherwise it'd be quite cold."

"Yes, artificial climate on the station and all the ships. I'd almost forgotten what weather actually was. Well, except for the time there was a malfunction in one of the life support systems in brown sector and it actually rained in two corridors." he said with a smirk.

"It rained? That must have been quite amusing for the inhabitants of those areas," she agreed. "Well, amusing and annoying. You'd get all wet!"

"The weather here is almost as strange as the rest of it. Hurricanes, tsunamis, even snowstorms and winter weather, which really should not happen here."

"I don't think the tech crew were particuarly amused, but I certainly was."

"Actual snow?" he asked, suddenly glad he had grabbed that long winter coat. "This is a tropical island how can there be-" he trailed off. "Never mind."

"Yes, actual snow. Last December the climate changed for an entire month," she explained. "We had pine trees and penguins and log cabins and snow instead of palm trees, monkeys, bamboo huts and tropical temperatures."

"I've no idea if it'll do that again, of course. More than likely it won't, since it already did that...it likes to be creative."
