I can safely say that my political awakening has only accelerated. I am now approaching true moderatism, the point at which all parties begin to look equally distasteful. The right is distasteful because I strongly disagree with some of their views. The left is distasteful because I strongly disagree with some of their values. (And by values, I mean arrogance. I find liberals to be more condescending. In my experience, the right has always been more straightforward in their insults. I'll take a "you're stupid" over a "you poor, misguided, blind fool, you must not be very educated if you disagree with me" any day. Just a little pet peeve of mine.)
It's disappointing that the Libertarian Party takes such extreme positions on everything. I understand the point of doing that - they're trying to be purists, after all - but it strikes me as slightly out of touch with reality. Plus, I was never an advocate of abolishing government. It exists for a reason.
Since I'm not bound by party affiliation to vote for a member of that party, it might be fun to register as a Republican. Just for the hell of it. I'd get to carouse with Republicans, who seem like heavy drinkers, and celebrate the joy of belonging to the same club as George Bush. Plus, I could have a hand in re-electing everybody's favorite Smiling Senator from Arizona, John McCain.
I don't trust that man. He smiles too much.
Staying Democrat, on the other hand, has its advantages. There's the physical property of inertia, for one. It is always easier to keep doing what you're doing than change what you're doing. Then there's the fact that I agree with a lot of their views on things like abortion, secularism, and free speech. I just don't agree with a lot of their views on things like guns, personal responsibility, and free trade.
Despite all this, I can't see the advantage of registering as an Independent ("No Party", not the Independent Party). Sure, symbolically, it would be a victory, but in real life, symbols don't count for much. Or I could just bite the bullet and do it anyway. It would have its advantages. I think.
As always, Livejournal determines the course of my life. Do not let the presence of a poll deter you from making a comment, unless it's a flame. I welcome comments, flames excepted. Ahem.
Poll Party party I leave you with this meaningful bumper sticker.
