Not the doorbell this time. Good, so I wouldn't have to throw crockery. Just a medium volume, patient knock that could really only belong to one person, so when I thought, Get fucked, as I heaved myself off my bed, I didn't quite mean it enough to say it. I slunk out and unlocked the door. He could open it by himself.

By the time he was inside and had his coat off, I was in the kitchen, staring at all the breakables. He found me there a moment later. He didn't speak, but his body language was a touch too aware. It made me itch to slug him, someplace non-vital. He's stronger than me. He could have me pinned and absorb everything I dealt him. Not his problem, though. I sucked in a breath through my teeth and pushed off towards the refrigerator, opening the door and looking in by habit. Pretty empty, aside from condiments, beer, a half-gone block of cheese, and that damned watermelon we should have eaten days ago.

Hold up, there. The melon.

I finally looked at him - Billy, jumper-clad and pink-cheeked from the cold - and twitched an eyebrow at him in greeting. He arched one back. I had to look away from him; he was making me lose my momentum. I wanted to keep my anger and remember what it was for. A surge of rage came up through me, and I wrestled the melon out of the fridge with exaggerated control. I was trying to be sarcastic with the universe.

I took the melon outside, found a cricket bat, and pegged the fucking thing into oblivion.

Billy applauded softly from the step. He was grinning a little, as though he'd got his own satisfaction from that. He looked more relaxed, anyway. I followed him inside to wash my hands. He got something to drink out of the fridge, and led the way again into the darkened front room. On an impulse, I shut the lights off in the kitchen as I passed through. The blue snowy light changed the way my little house felt inside.

He tucked himself up on the sofa next to me - a dangerous person in his own right, but so happy.

We tilted, eventually. He fell asleep before I did. I let my arm go numb beneath him. I forgot to hold my anger close, and just held him.
