Had one of those Good/Bad Days yesterday....

I got the trip to the dentist over with - fitting the caps for the tooth I had to get the root canal for, plus another that had a giant cavity we'd already filled (the dentist and I were both worried about the strength of the tooth after seeing the size of the filling, so you don't need to worry that they're just trying to get me to pay for caps I don't need ). That's quite an ordeal if you've never had it done. They have to numb you up because they need to shape the tooth to fit under the cap, and then pull the gum tissue away from the tooth so they can make an impression to send to the lab for making the permanent caps. I have temporary caps on now so I can eat, but we'll trade those out in around three weeks to the permanent ones. My gums are really sore today - taking ibuprofen and maybe even one of my stronger pain tablets left over from when I had the initial work done (I never take all of the pain medicines prescribed because I usually depend on ibuprofen).

Glad to have that over with, so it was a good/bad thing.

The good parts:

Schlepped for pipmudturtle while he did his photography class homework. I helped carry and hold equipment while he did "Depth of Field" studies of various artistic thingies up and down Main Street. We took a few shots of a couple of statues of our town movers and shakers; some of the many lovely flower beds in one of the local parks; some abstract shots of lamp posts, the undersides of the suspension bridge over the little river downtown, a couple of buildings, and looking into the business end of a cannon at another park. We then relocated to the other end of Main Street and visited the oldest cemetery in town, where he used up the rest of his film on some lovely shots of the weathered old monuments against the ancient trees - and we spent some time strolling down the pathways reading the inscriptions from back in the days when Kye and Chance would have been alive.

"That's the sort of inscription I want you guys to put on my tombstone," Pip said after we'd read a stone with a nice bit of poetry carved on it.

"I suppose 'He was a bit odd' would strike the wrong chord with people," I replied. "But I always thought we'd put 'Still not as gay as J' on your stone." (J being my friend-and-former-f**k-buddy who also used to be Pip's roommate before he moved in with me after J got married - convoluted enough for ya?)

Once Pip recovered from his laughing fit, he had to text this idea to J, who declared his intention of "taking a dump" into Pip's casket just before the funeral -- "And you will go first, my friend!"

We had lunch at a fun little local place, The Lazy Goat - they do a nice Middle-Eastern/American mix. We were pleased to learn that one of the indie bookstores hosts a "Book Your Lunch" meeting regularly, where you can meet and greet a local author while enjoying a great lunch - going to see about signing up for that one once my anthology comes out! After our stroll we stopped for desserts and lattes at The Chocolate Moose.

I took a short break to get in some writing while pipmudturtle hustled back to tech to develop his film, then we went over to J's place and hung out with his wife B for a little video gaming and dinner at the local upscale-burger joint. Our waiter wasn't the sharpest crayon in the box, but it was his first week on the job, so we left him a nice tip anyhow. Once J got off work, we all had a good laugh over my tales of my sister's reaction to the "intervention" meeting and J ragged Pip once more for his choice of epitaphs.

So, all-in-all, a pretty good day was had by everyone.

The "Miss Emily" chapter is moving along, albeit a bit slowly. I need to find some source of tension for the woman, maybe a subplot. And I want to add a little more tension with the main story, maybe a hint that they might not succeed at their task, and thus get tossed into jail at the end of the book.

kye and the kid, best friends are part of your soul, my karma ran over your dogma, the fall will probably kill you, in the morning ... i'm making waffles
