BSG Rec (and the thoughts it triggered on Kara and Lee)
Hi everyone,
I just finished gushing over a lovely story that I read upon the recommendation of kag523and decided that I should rec it here as well. The story caught me on an especially emotional day and made a hot mess out of me for some reason. I mean, tears and all. Seriously.
It is Oneshot - Kepéla by howlinchickhowl. A heartbreaking, nonlinear telling of the Kara and Lee relationship that weaves in and out of canon with Zak and Helo popping in at times.
Here is what it got me to think about and write in my comment:
Your story absolutely broke my heart! I love Kara and I love Lee, and I absolutely LOVE their tragic story. So it pains me to say this, but somewhere along the way I started believing that Lee was the one that loved more. As much as Kara knew there was an incredible connection between her and Lee and loved him in her own dysfunctional way, for Lee she was everything. I am not sure if this was actually in canon or the stories shaped my perception (and it breaks my heart) but your sentences below say it so beautifully:
"...sometimes he thinks it's enough that he's the one she calls when she gets into trouble."
"Every cell in his body is aching to tell her that even if they aren't together in the way that she understands best, the only way in which she's ever been able to express herself with any kind of control, he will never love another being in any world in the same way, with the same force as the ways in which he loves her."
This got me thinking some more. What caused this change in my perception? Perhaps the canon scene of their meeting where Jaime does a great job of looking completely enthralled from the first moment? Or is it because fanon has been subtly repeating this notion, perhaps because we have a number of writers that are better at or more comfortable with Lee's inner voice than Kara's? Is that because we find it easier to explain Lee's motives than Kara's? Oh the rabbit hole.
Remind me lovely ones of stories that have a different point of view. Did I forget them all in my fog of despair today?
