I've been rereading the Game of Thrones. At first I didn't really start reading intentionally. I had just finished the four books for the first time - swallowed them whole, reading day and night despite a full time job and a fairly active social calender. Then I started bugging my friends, telling them how amazing the books are. Finally, one of my good friends, also a big reader herself, decided to check out the books. As expected, she got into them fairly quickly as well. I kept getting excited as she read and started asking her where she was so I wouldn't spoil anything for her. Soon enough, I found myself reading along, excited to experience what she was experiencing. I know. Dorky. Heh!
I think I mentioned this already - how I hadn't read any spoilers, any posts of any kind during my first read. Afterwards however, I did spend time on various LJ communities, wikis and blogs and discovered a few threads that were intriguing to me. Things that I missed perhaps... So this time around, my eyes are open. I am enjoying noticing GRRM's little clues which make me think of "what if's"
What if Lord Stark had noticed Renly's comment about Tyrion betting for Jaime? What if, he paid attention to Arya (who did Arya overhear anyway??) ? What if Catelyn sent Ser Rodrick on his own instead of going to King's Landing herself. What if Sansa wasn't stupid enough to love Joffrey, trust Cersei.. What if Ned had sat her daughters down and explained the danger to them instead of telling them what to do.. The list goes on and on.
I just reread the section where Ned gets attacked by Jamie, where Jory gets killed. I was dreading this scene, it made me cringe the second time around as well. As much as I came to appreciate the changes in Jamie later on, this along with his actions with Bran are just too hard to take for me. I know some people seem to love him with a fever. I.just.cant. I loved Ned and this was so completely cold blooded I find it hard to forget.
On a separate note, I have issues with the casting of Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Jamie as well. Initially I didnt think he was the right kind of good looking for the role. I guess I had envisioned a Jamie that was good looking in a pretty way, whereas Nikolaj is more good looking in a manly way. But now I have an altogether different reason to be wary. I've seen the promos, I've seen the gorgeous icons and this Jamie is TOO good looking for me now. We are not supposed to find him attractive despite his good looks and I worry that we will be robbed of our gradual transition of sentiment for this character.
I am rambling. "2-4-6-0-1" in the background.
