Last night - something about the old church again - boring.
Night before - doing my puppet tour all over again, with the same girls as before, but older and wiser and more stable. Setting up on stage that looked like covered in black garbage bags.
Saw Pan's Labyrinth yesterday. Very full of creaking sounds. And I'm not sure if sitting through 75% of ripping flesh was worth the 25% of semi-interesting fantasy. If you're pregnant and/or don't like watching lethal facial injuries happen, you probably don't want to see this movie. Nobody said it was a slasher flick, but it is: instead of around-the-corner I'm-gonna-get-you, though, it's in-your-face I'm-gonna-gut-you. Why must something be utterly brutal for it to be brilliant, according to critics?
Sometimes I wonder, too, if movies are meant to be some new exercise in forcing yourself not to cry when you really really want to. I think all of the friends we went with cried, plus there was some serious snuffling and gasping from everyone else around us. I bit mine back - once I get started, I keep going all day. I just hate it when people see me fall apart.
Does anyone else get super tense when they see movies in the theater lately? It must be the subject matter - usually it's what Dan's friends want to see, which means action all the way.
I must say, though, that the world was mighty beautiful after we exited the theater. It was 4:30 in the Hollywood district, and everything was in shades of gray and blue. Ach, I can't even describe it. At any rate, it was glorious.
AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT:
Steve's Fragrant Fruit Salad
Mango
Bosc pear
Apple
Plum
Strawberries
Skin everything but the strawberries. Cut everything into sheetlike wedges; thin but not paper-thin. Mix up with some lemon juice, orange juice, and honey. Let marinate a bit in the fridge.
I had this last night after a simple, slightly bitter green salad and oh my lord was it heavenly. Something about the mix of all these things makes it like perfume.
