So, being pregnant, (which I am for those of you who have not read the Cell thread), I find the subject is preying on my subconscious. Last night I had a GI Joe dream (which is surprising in itself, but I suppose my subconscious buys into pregnant Transformers as much as my conscious does) about the upcoming movie. In this dream, Scarlett was pregnant--still wearing those tight black leathers from the actual movie production, but sporting a baby-bump.
Now, I am not overall filled with excitement or even great interest in the GI Joe movie--I was very fond of the series as a child, but there are a lot of serious real-world connotations that go with the subject material, and I'm not sure how well that will sit with me in your average summer blockbuster form. However, just for the record, according to my dream, the movie will revolve around a dastardly plan in which Cobra infiltrate an underground (literally) society of monks for MacGuffin unspecified; the Joes form a secret undercover base among the monks from which to fight back. Both sides seem to have a few more female characters than usual, and the Joes have randomly enlisted a 12 year old boy for reasons which I couldn't figure out, but he was really irritating.
The Joes also appear to have no maternity leave or in fact any concessions to pregnancy, since Scarlett is out on the front lines and nobody pays any attention to her condition least of all herself. And unlike me, she appears completely unaffected by her extra bulk, with the one exception that she's unable to jump obstacles with the other Joes and has to go round (while they carelessly leave her behind).
Anyway, I don't know how the dream ended. I woke up when the Joes had fled battle with Cobra because it was lunchtime back at base. But it made me decide that there should be more pregnant action heroes. Or at the very least, ones for whom motherhood does not mean retirement to background character (see Season 3 Carly). I seem to recall that MASK managed to have a single dad who juggled caring for his son and leading a vigilante group. Why can't women get the same treatment (Mrs Incredible aside, and even she was supposedly retired)?
