I've gone and rejoined Netflix. We tried Netflix right after we bought our house, but found it was taking, like, a month for each film to get to us, so that our $20 or so per month was allowing us to see only two or three films. The presumption at the time was that postal employees were borrowing films on our dime and returning them whenever they ( Read more... )

Of course, some people have ethical issues with BB. I do too, but I've softened on them after encountering the snotty little cineastes at my local "cool" video store. Last time I was there, I rented some Larry Cohen titles (killer babies!), and the clerk (who wore a Jeffrey Dahmer button and had never spoken to me before during a transaction) looked up in surprise and said, "This is a cool movie!"

Oh, GOD, do I understand the "gramps" thing. I'll be wearing something vintage and I'll get the same thing from the young gals, "I love your coat (grandma)!"

My husband and I were shipping my grandfather's belongings to our house after he passed away, including a bunch of my mid-'80s yearbooks. The child behind the counter was obsessed, thumbing through them and squealing, "This is so OLD! This is so OLD!" Good thing we didn't show her all the 1930s photos and clippings--no doubt she'd think they were prehistorical.

Thanks for the heads up on the BB thing. I will definitely look into it if the Netflix thing doesn't work out. I hate to say it, but if I avoided every store in this town with which I have ethical issues I'd have maybe two places to shop. It's hard to stick to your values in Chain Store, USA.
