it's the first day of spring with clean air in the wind
and everything is just like it should be
the roads are jammed up with trollies and cars
and i'm standing in the street with my hands upon my heart
this is the place that i used to know
but it's been wiped away and put up for show
i'm all alone in the middle of a crowd
i open my mouth and scream a silent shout
i jumped out of bed and had my first cigarette
it made my body feel sick but helped my mind relax
the cranes are moving on the skyline
and the water is dripping from the kitchen tap
these times they are changing
but i am being left behind
everybody running trying to catch up with their lives
the hypocrites on the television screens
are trying to disguise what the really mean
they say things are getting better
when we know they're getting worse
while they're buying bigger guns from shirking thirst
the stink and sweat
and the flesh and bones have been replaced and are being sold
and i thought melting down for pillars and soap
but they try to stop us to keep out the cold
the cranes are moving in the twilight
