In a Cheap Red Dress
Suddenly she begins to feel the exquisite freedom of her youth. She begins to really see herself and feel her body move freely. For a passing instant, she feels childish and cliche for the moment hitting her in a dance club, but the music pounds and thumps and screams too loudly for her to think. She guesses that is the attraction in the first place.
These strange, scantly clad women around her began to make her feel beautiful too. She wants to stay there forever. She assumes, by now, the pills have kicked in. She dances and sways and grins feral grins at anyone who looks in her direction. She doesn't want it to be quarter to three in the morning, knowing the club closes in those few short minutes.
It is in the taxi back to the hotel, she realizes, the night isn't even close to over yet. She presses her hand to the window and watches the rain fall in rivulets down the glass under the orange glow of the street lights. She is fascinated by this. Stephanie and some other girl they have picked up from the club are giggling beside her. She turns, slowly, to look at them and watches as they kiss. Stephanie moans and it sounds like music. She smiles, leaning her head back on the car seat and running a finger down the spine of the new girl. Her fingernail catches lightly on the fabric of her red dress but she likes the way the tug feels. The taxi driver is smiling too. He is taking the long way to the hotel but runs a red light on the deserted street as the three girls pull together for a kiss. It's her first three-way kiss. Another first. It won't be her last on this night.
As the girls climb out of the taxi, it is Stephanie who points out the the moon is not, in fact, full. They stand in the light of the hotel lobby, staring up at the moon and what they can see of the stars. Stephanie says if they stay in bed all night, then all morning and afternoon, it will be full then. So they have plans for the next day after all.
