She's got a transit route running through her head, a constant calculation of her bank account, books to be picked up at the library and a list of things to do before she even goes to work. Walking down the street, distracted and frowning, she is dodging baby buggies and teenage mothers. The sun reflecting off the top windows of city hall catches her eye and she looks up. There are six crows, in a perfect row on the window sill, looking back down on her. Inexplicably she smiles, feels special for having caught such a moment and moves on.

He doesn't say much as she packs up their baby and leaves. She tells him she's going back to her mother's house but there's someone on the side. He's known for months but loves his boy, even though he no longer loves her. He thought she'd stay for the kid. He can't stand the old apartment now, too quiet without the baby screaming all the time. That kid has a great set of lungs. He never asks her why, not through divorce papers and custody hearings. It isn't until the day his car breaks down on his way from work and he's walking that he figures it out. She's there, his son and some man. . .a tall, muscular, well dressed man with darker skin than his own. They are laughing, playing on the slide and they all love very happy together. He thinks he should feel jealous but he feels relief all over his body. He knows now, that you can't raise a baby in a home where there is no love. It's not the life he wanted for his son but what plans in life ever come through. Now he'll have the chance at double the love and attention.
