i thought up one line on the bus going to work today and i worked this whole story around it, including the prompt word. awesome.
She is sitting on the only picnic table in the whole park. There are little hills and birch trees protecting her from the somewhat gusting wind. She is breathing, trying not to think about anything, just breathe. There is no one else in the park and she is far enough away from the street to not feel self-conscious when she closes her eyes.
Time passes, she has to hold the edges of her coat to keep from checking the clock on her cell phone. She is not killing time, she thinks, she is enjoying nature. She is disconnecting from the internet and therefore her friends, so that she can be outside while it is still daylight. Technically it is twilight but she has never understood semantic.
The shade from one of the birch trees has fall over her body. She moves her face back and forth, feeling for the difference in temperature. It is a test. It is neurotic and she knows that but she is trying. Trying to change, to become someone other people don't talk about when they want to feel better about themselves. She is trying to be more like them. She has convinced herself she can do it, so she is outside, in a lonely park, sitting in the shade.
She begins to cry. It comes out of nowhere. Her shoulders heave with the effort of the tears escaping frantically. She is unhappy and confused and alone in a park, far from home, as it is steadily becoming night. She wipes her eyes with the rough sleeve of her winter coat. They sting and she blinks hard, letting her eyes become unfocused and then focus on something distant.
The back of the birch leaves are white. The ones that have fallen lay scattered on the ground around the base of the tree trunk. From far away they look like white rose petals, laid out delicately. The corners of her mouth quirk upward. Well, that looks inviting.
i have plans on saturday. i feel like i haven't said that in months. wow.
also: i got a cell phone! jason gave it to me because he's all kinds of awesome.
