When he walked into the room Jake was still asleep. He shrugged off the small duffle bag and set it on the floor beside the bed. He sat down on the chair and looked out the window. He had decided not to wake up Jake until the doctor came in. Daniel still had to park the car and meet them inside. Dan was uncomfortable in the hospital, as most people where, so He let him keep busy arranging the cars instead of dealing with checking Jake out.
The doctor and a nurse, that He recognized from the first night that He stayed over, came into the room chatting loudly. Jake stirred in his sleep and then sat up. The doctor picked up the clipboard at the end of the bed and marked on it.
"How are you feeling?" he questioned, pen poised over the clipboard.
"Tired. I'm fine, though. I'm better, I think. . .you know. Fuck man, I just woke up. Give me a minute." The nurse smiled at him and looked up at the doctor. She nodded slightly, unconscious of doing so.
"I think that you're fine as well. You're going to be released but it's my opinion that-"
"I've alright got a therapist," Jake said, rubbing the sleep away form his eyes.
"Very well then," and the doctor looked at his watch, made another note on the board and handed it to the nurse. "Good luck Mr. "
"Jake, please. You'll make me feel old," he offers a feeble grin at the nurse who smiles back and pats him arm. They leave the room and Jake rakes his hands through his hair. Jake turns to look at his friend and He thinks that Jake looks small in that bed.
"I brought you a bag of clothes. Charlotte wanted to make sure you had something clean to wear. There's a bag with a toothbrush and stuff like that too." He bends down, retrieves the bag and sets it on the bed.
"Thank god," mumbles Jake, "My breath smells worse than hospital food. Ugh." He laughs and takes the bag into an adjoined washroom. He noticed that Jake is moving slowly and wonders if he is in any pain still. He wonders if he would tell him, if he asked. He decides not too. Daniel walks into the room, head down. When he looks up, he stares at the empty bed.
"He's getting ready in the washroom," He tell Daniel who leans awkwardly against the wall. He nods, looking serious.
"There was a couple reporters outside. I parked the car and they came to talk to me. I decided to move the car around back and we can leave the side door instead of the other way."
"Why are they here?"
"I don't know but I didn't know what the hell to say. I said Jake was fine and we'll be making an album next summer."
"Will we?"
"I don't care, it gave them enough to back off for a minute." He laughs and Jake comes out looking better than he had a few minutes before. Daniel tells him the story of the reporters and he laughs too.
"Slow news day, huh?"
"Yeah, where's a good natural disaster when you really need one?" Jake tucks the get well soon cards on his side table in his bag. He stops and stares, with furrowed brow, at the two bouquets of flowers Charlotte and Cole bought him from the hospital gift shop. Daniel take his bag and Jake picks the flowers up in his arms carefully.
"I gotta do something first," he says, walking out into the hallway. He turns the opposite way from the exit and the other two men follow him. Jake stops two doors down from his room and walks in. They watch him set the two bouquets of lilies on the side table of a sleeping elderly woman. He comes out, takes his bag from Daniel and the three members of Stilted walk down the hallway together, down a flight of stairs and out of the building in silence.
