I'll probably always associate the Star Wars theme with Bill Murray doing his Airport lounge lizard bit. Oh that wasn't meant to be sacrilegious or anything.
Anywaaay...
CBC radio reviewed an article about George Lucas in the latest issue of Wired, Life After Darth.

The article mentions influences in Lucas' early days at film school. His professors screened shorts and documentaries that were coming out of the National Film Board of Canada. Not the kind we see here on tv, though, these were experimental films by Lipsett, McLaren, and Jutra. In particular it was an abstract film by Arthur Lipsett which had a profound effect upon Lucas, 21-87. Hence the number 2187 is referenced throughout his work. For example Princess Leia is held in cell 2187. More on the connections in the article.

Interestingly, Lucas saw his future as an editor in avant-garde films not as a director, and certainly not as head of a commercial movie empire. Therefore, Lucas now identifies with Darth Vader, "I have become the very thing that I was trying to avoid."

Fact:
In a British census something like 390,000 listed their religion as Jedi.
