Draco Malfoy is not a Top
I don't understand it. I don't understand it, I vehemently disagree with it, and here are my reasons why. Keep in mind that I'm using fanon definitions of "top" and "bottom", meaning the cliched and sterotypical requirements for both.
1. Operating within the definition of a "top", Draco fails miserably. First and foremost, a top is always in control. Always cool, calm and collected. How many times have we seen Draco frightened, unnerved, frazzled and near tears, or outright crying? Also, running alongside the control issue, Draco has never had to practice self-control. Those of you who have read Sex Magic know my feelings on this. Anal sex requires the person "topping" to be remarkably in control of themselves, so that they will not hurt the "bottom." Draco is a spoiled brat who takes what he wants, when he wants. I cannot picture him as a considerate or gentle lover. Secondly, Draco is not tough. He isn't menacing, or frightening, or intimidating in any way. He uses the influence of stronger, more influential people around him to intimidate others. I don't understand the authors that attempt to make him into a cool, suave James Bond proxy. He simply isn't.
2. A major part of my hatred of Top!Draco is the necessary requirement of bottom!Harry. Of the two of them, Harry's the top. Harry's got balls, plain and simple. He rushes into dangerous situations headlong. He's got a temper that could rival a Hippogriff. He's endured years of physical and psychological abuse, and it hasn't effected his self-esteem one bit. Also, Harry's got himself a control complex. He doesn't even reveal the full extent of what he's thinking/feeling to Ron and Hermione. Can you really picture him laying himself bare beneath someone he doesn't even trust? I truly don't understand how some fic authors can stomach turning Harry into a weepy, blushing pod person. Harry is NOT afraid of Draco. He would NOT back down from him. He doesn't blush and stammer at the slightest sexual innuendo. For God's sake, he was the aggressor in his relationship with Ginny, who's no shy type herself. He instigated their first kiss, he asked her to go for "walks around the lake." Harry isn't a wilting flower virginal type. He's every bit a red-blooded, horny teenage boy. Please, stop forcing Harry to fulfill some fantasy of a classic romance novel heroine.
3. Now, operating off what what I've said that Harry isn't, how much better does Draco fit what I described above? Someone who backs down, relents, submits to others? Draco is cowed by his professors, his father, and Voldemort on a regular basis. Harry defies these figures. Where Draco would run away with his tail tucked between his legs, Harry would make a stand. Draco is simply more likely to be submissive than Harry. Draco is also the phsyically weaker of the two of them, with Harry consistently beating him in displays of strength, agility, and even spell-casting. One of the fanon requirements for a top is that they are stronger/faster than the bottom, and able to overpower them. Of the two of them, this fits Harry much better than it does Draco.
In conclusion, Harry tops Draco's pert little pale ass, and Draco loves it.
