I didn't expect to hear that question so soon.
R's teacher is having a baby at the end of the month so I shouldn't be surprised that she's asking questions about babies and their provenance and all that. What I didn't expect was this exchange:
"Mommy," R asked, "Do you remember when you told me that sometimes boys marry boys and girls marry girls?"
I responded, "Yes...what's on your mind?" My mind was racing full of where is this going? and wonder that she even remembered that conversation.
"Where do they get the babies?"
"Um - what? What babies?"
"How do boys who marry boys get babies?"
I'm ashamed to admit I told her "From the baby store." Which I meant as a joke, that of course she didn't get and she asked me where the store was. I had to quickly backtrack and talk to her about adoption and "other ways too complicated to explain right now," and when I got done panicking about having the sex talk with her at sex I realized the good in this situation:
I now have a valid reason to buy
And Tango Makes Three - a kids book about a male penguin couple who adopt a baby penguin. It's the cutest book in the world and now I have an excuse to own it!
While I'm at it I might have to get
Where Did I come From too...
