::CHAPTER 1::

“Wake up! Wake up!” A woman in her early 40s came barging into her son’s room, pulling the curtains open. She smiled at the unmoving body under the duvet. “Howon....” his mom called, sat at the edge of his bed; very gently she pulled down the duvet that covered his head.

“Five, five...”he groaned, sinking his head into the bed sheets. His mother reached for his dark hair, ruffled them lovingly before swooping down to kiss his temple.

“You’re just like your dad,” she whispered, her fingers traced her son’s jaw line.

“I’m hotter,” he joked, earning a chuckle from his mom.

“Come on, Howon. You’re gonna be late for school!” his mom swatted his behind playfully.

“MOM!”

---

“This is your lunch,” his mom handed him a small lunchbox while he put on his shoes. “And this is for him.” She handed him another one. Howon smiled at her, kiss her goodbye and set off to school.

Howon took a bus to school. As always, he never gets to sit in the extremely packed bus. He was practically squished between two large boys, his head bobbing every now and then to catch his breath. He thought it was just his mind playing tricks on him when he felt a hand on his butt. But when he felt it for the second time, the hand stayed there. He turned around to see and ahjumma looking up at him with a creepy grin, her hand won’t leave his butt alone. Howon’s eyes went big, at least big enough for him to stare at the ahjumma.

He didn’t realise that the large boy in front of him had went out of the bus, but as soon as the bus started moving again, he was jerked to the front and crashed into a girl.

“Hey, watch it punk!” and with that, he earned a hard slap on his left cheek. The slap was hard enough that it made poor Howon’s head to turn to his right. He heard a small giggle and looked up to see a boy cupping his mouth trying to contain his laughter. Their eyes met for a few good seconds before the boy stood up when the driver pulled on the brakes and walked pass Howon, exiting the bus.

Howon wasn’t sure for how long had he been staring at the other boy when he felt a rough push on his back and he was sent crashing into another girl, earning another slap on his right cheek this time. He didn’t feel the sting that began to kick in when the palms of both girls met his cheek but he has one thing he was sure before the boy left the bus.

“Kim Sunggyu.”

He took the name tag that had fell to the floor of the bus.

---

“I swear I had it here!” Sunggyu pouted, touching the spot on his school uniform where he had pinned his name tag just before leaving his house this morning.

“Maybe you misplaced it, hyung,” Sungjong searched for Sunggyu’s name tag in his bag. Sunggyu pouted more at Sungjong.

“I have never ever, I repeat, Kim Sunggyu has never ever misplaced his stuffs!” Sunggyu crossed his arms, frustrated. Now, Sungjong was pouting just as much as him. To be stuck with such a childish hyung was a problem and to be stuck with a nagging hyung was just too much for him to handle.

“Maybe you can ask Woohyun hyung to help you find it after school,” Sungjong suggested, planning for an escape from his depressed hyung before he was stuck with his nags forever.

“Ask me what?”

Woohyun had came with a bright smile on his face. He hung his arm over Sunggyu’s shoulders but was surprised when the latter pushed him away, pouting. Woohyun looked at Sungjong for answers. “Sunggyu hyung lost his name tag.”

“Did you misplace it?” Woohyun bounced around Sunggyu and Sungjong.

“I NEVER MISPLACE ANYTHING IN MY LIFE BEFORE!”
Sunggyu stretched an arm angrily as Woohyun bounced around him, successfully hitting him at his privates, causing the boy to fall to the floor, curled and groaning in pain.

“I-I’m...f-fine-e...”

Myungsoo frowned at the bluish-purple spot on his the skin of his ribs from the reflection on the bathroom mirror. He pulled out a cream and hastily dabbed it on the swell. When he heard the flush being pulled from one of the toilet stalls, he quickly pulled down his shirt, hid the tube of cream into his pants’ pocket and tucked his shirt into his pants’ with a slight grimace when his shirt stretched on the swelling part of his body.

Howon came out from the stall, meeting Myungsoo’s eyes on the process. He washed his hands under the running tap water, while Myungsoo’s fingers reached to fix his own hair. When he had finished, he walked pass Howon to the door, but Howon caught his arm. Myungsoo held his breath when Howon’s hand went to push his bangs away from his forehead, revealing a small but deep cut just above his eyes.

“Myung-g---”

“It’s nothing,” Myungsoo pulled Howon’s hand away from his face.

“If he does it again, I swear I’ll---”

Myungsoo’s lips met his in a slow kiss. Howon kissed him back but quickly pulled away when he felt Myungsoo’s tear fall onto his cheeks. Howon’s hand spontaneously cupped Myungsoo’s cheeks and he brought his thumbs to wipe those tears away. “Don’t cry, you fool.” With a small smile, Howon pecked at the cut near his eyes.

“Meet me at lunch,” he whispered, placing his forehead against Myungsoo’s. When Myungsoo nodded, he let him go and left the bathroom.
Myungsoo looked back towards the mirror. A vague, sad smile escaped his thin lips.
As Howon had said earlier, the two met at their usual spot near the school field, under a large shady tree. Howon had waited for the other to come, leaning against the tree trunk. He smiled when he saw Myungsoo’s slim figure, walking towards him, with one of his good guy smile. Howon’s smile widened as the other approached him, sitting beside him.

“I brought lunch.” Howon handed Myungsoo his lunchbox

“Why does your mom keep feeding me every now and then?” Myungsoo took the lunchbox. Howon giggled at the red spots forming on Myungsoo’s cheeks. How adorable, he thought.

“Well, that’s because you haven’t been coming to my house for dinner anymore, and that she’s worried that her son is dating a cardboard rather than a normal human being,” Howon dug into his lunchbox. He laughed when Myungsoo punched his arm playfully.

“What cardboard..” Myungsoo shook his head and began eating his own lunch. From the corner of his eyes, Howon watched as Myungsoo ate his food with a smile. He remembered the day when he first met Myungsoo. Myungsoo was a year younger than he is. Howon was walking down the hallway, when he walked into a few boys surrounding Myungsoo, harassing him.

He was not any larger than the other boys nor did he had any fighting experiences, but he just felt he had to save Myungsoo. He didn’t really fought with the boys; it was more like he made himself the target while signalling Myungsoo to run.

This place, under this tree where Howon sat during lunch time, examining the cuts and bruises on his face, arms and other parts body when Myungsoo came and silently cleaned them with water before dabbing ointment on them while Howon stared at him; both not knowing how to start the conversation.

As if on cue, they grew fond of each other. Myungsoo didn’t talk much but he can be talkative at times and Howon likes that part of him. Myungsoo always has this smile that can make Howon’s life turn upside down.

“Hyung!” Myungsoo’s voice roped him back to reality. He blinked his eyes when Myungsoo shot him a weird stare, before it slowly transformed into a very huge smile. Myungsoo’s eyes almost disappeared when he smiled. For Howon, everything went slow motion the moment Myungsoo smiled, Myungsoo’s face bloomed with blinding white lights and everything went mute.

Myungsoo’s fingers reached to wipe the side of Howon’s lips which was smeared when he was eating. “Lunch time’s gonna end soon. Hurry up and finish your lunch already,” the younger said when Howon snapped back to reality again.

---

“Woohyun, stop.”
Sunggyu had one hand holding Woohyun’s attacking hand, while the other one hurriedly copying what the teacher wrote on the whiteboard. Woohyun had been tickling him since lunch time and it bothered Sunggyu to no end.

“Cut it out, Woohyun!” Sunggyu hissed.

Sungyeol who sat behind them kicked Woohyun’s chair. “Quit flirting, you guys!” Sunggyu sent him a deathly glare, while Woohyun grinned at him stupidly.
