If the stars were mine, I'd give them all to you

Let's talk music, flist.

Specifically, let's talk modern jazz.

Melody Gardot. I've already mentioned her, but, hay-zeus, you must check her out.

A couple years ago, when I still cared about iTunes' new discovery downloads and freebies of the week, they were pimping out this song called Worrisome Heart. I clicked, listened to the 30 second clip, and decided I like the smoky, jazz-bar sound of it. Little was I to know, forget like, I was to absolutely love it.

This woman is astounding. Thank Wikipedia for the next bit, cos I'm too tired/lazy,  lol.

When she was 19 and out bicycling, she was hit by a car.

"In the accident she suffered serious head and spinal injuries and her pelvis was broken in two places. Because of these severe injuries she was confined to her hospital bed for a year and had to remain lying on her back. As a further consequence of her injuries she had to re-learn simple tasks such as brushing her teeth and walking. The most noticeable effect of the neural injuries she suffered is that she was left hyper-sensitive to both light and sound, therefore requiring her to wear dark sunglasses at nearly all times to shield her eyes. The accident also resulted in both long and short term memory problems and difficulty with her sense of time. Gardot has described coping with this as like "climbing Mount Everest every day" as she often wakes with no memory of what she has to do that day.

After her accident Gardot began writing music and since then often speaks and advocates in favour of using music for therapy. The accident had damaged the neural pathways between the brain's two cortexes which control perception and higher mental function, and made Gardot (in her own words) "a bit of a vegetable." As well as making it very hard for her to speak or communicate properly, she found it difficult to recall the right words to express her feelings."

Thank you Wikipedia

And now I find out that not only does this woman have the voice I've always wanted my jazz voice to sound like, but she's hilarious and adorable and beautiful on top of that? Colour me jealous! I already pretend to be her in my dreams (well, that's not strictly true; in my dreamworld, I am a famous jazz singer whose best, fan-favorite pieces are MB's version of Feeling Good, and Ms. Gardot's Worrisome Heart and Who Will Comfort Me?), but now I know she's also really awesome.
