TITLE: Undesirable (A vampire novel) RATING: NC-17 (This chapter PG-13) SUMMARY: Wally and Geo continue their awkward journey to try to figure out what the hell that bathroom encounter means to them. Word Count: 5223
I LOVED their interaction. They were so cute and funny and it's like, yay for no MISTAKEN LOVE THINGS. Well, not much and it's mostly resolved and it's so adorable.
All my vampires are rather flawed, but she more than most. She was smug, snooty, greedy and manipulative. But not quite imaginative enough to prevent Jeffrey from utterly humiliating her.
I do feel for the girls who are in her harem though. And George did point out the fact that Whites wouldn't GET a job at all. Because no one expects them to be able to NEED a job. So George is frankly screwed, unless he freelances.
There are a lot of unintended consequences to harem life. It does impact their ability to get jobs even if they aren't white. Just the fact that an employer can't rely on someone to show up when needed -- because a vampire can always just say, "hey, I get first priority." Once hired, employers can't punish the employee for being called up to Serve, but it makes it tough to get hired in the first place. Even the stipend works both ways: On one hand it does help harem members who are underemployed, but it also means that employers see less reason to hire them.
While a vampire might help out their harem when times get tough and they go completely broke, but this isn't exactly a burning issue for them. More of an "I'll deal with it if it becomes a problem to me personally" issue.
If you piss them off enough, they might punish you. But generally not taking care of your harem is considered shameful. It's something a vampire has to weigh out, because vampires are ruled by ettiquettes rather than laws -- so if enough of your neighbors think what you are doing is wrong, they can punish you for it. At least on the surface, what they do needs to be justifiable to their peers.
So whipping or hobbling or banding a run away is actually considered more acceptable than dressing him poorly or not feeding him. As the first is clearly a sign of discipline while the other is a sign of neglect.
They'd encourage a hobby instead -- a volunteer job if they felt civic minded would be allright. But Whites don't belong in the workforce. They have more important things to do with their free time. Like resting and keeping in shape.
Well, to the vampires semi-credit: This whole system of Whites and yellows and blacks etc has only been around for about 13 years. They haven't totally worked out the bugs.
But yes, Whites are pretty much screwed from the moment they are identified.
He loved his job. He was doing something he thought was really useful, training educators to use the software his company produced, and he got to travel to exotic places to boot, which gave him a fair amount of bragging rights.

Huh.
So what if one of the whites wants a job? if they asked the Vampire to let them have a job - for fun, say?
