Hentai, hentai, hentai

So I went to Yaoi-con and as a consolation prize for my husband I grabbed a few random hentai mags. I didn't bother to look at them because there were so many really good doujins to look at and I figured, eh het-porn, not really my thing.

... so anyway, night before last I finally did. I was surprised by what I found. I don't know if this is what all japanese based Het-porn is like, but my random grabbing seemed to come up with exactly the same sort of stuff in all of them.

The first thing that struck me was how much non-con was in it -- like pretty much every story. It ranged from some girl being snookered into doing something she would have never agreed to if she'd known, to down right whapping the girl on the back of her head and and screwing her when she gains consciousness again.

I like non-con, but I admit to having a squick about men raping women, and not to surprisingly none of the stories appealed to me. But you know it's not just enough for me to say, ew, yuck, not for me. No, I'm the kind that likes to parse her distaste to little clockwork peices and figure out just where the icky really lies.

Like I said I like non-con. I like dominence/submission. And I like naked women and men. All factors point to me liking this stuff. Yet I don't and I figured out why.

1) I love power plays, but this reads shallow and unearned. The guys universally don't have to do any real work to get what they want. So it's not that the guy is so powerful and dominant, so much as his victim is so incredibly flimsy and incapable. In every case, the girl doesn't do anything to try save herself -- I'm not saying she doesn't do anything effective, I mean she doesn't do anything AT ALL! Save maybe stare pathetically and plead -- but really that's not fighting. That's a reward for winning.

Even in the physical overpowering, if there is any possiblity of a struggle, they gang up many on one. But mostly they just cut to the girl already tied up and ready to go.

This isn't dominance/submission to me -- this is fucking a doll. There is no sense of personhood in these girls; like tissues, they are expendible, and the next girl (with very subtle changes in her looks) is pretty much exactly the same as the last.

2) I love non-con for it's emotional tenseness. The fear for the victim, the worry for how it will all pan out. These stories were strangely emotionless. I didn't feel any particular sympathy towards the victims, nor did I feel any particular fear of the bad guy. Part of this is due to the girls being essentially cardboard cut outs. But a lot had to do with the fact that the manga-kas themselves had no sympathy for the girls.

It was clear that you weren't meant to be sympathetic to them, or really care what they felt. The audience is supposed to feel the flush of power at being able to make these girls go all bendy with the power of their mighty pricks.

But for the guys, there is no sense of risk -- No one comes to these girls rescue, no one cares about their welfare. Hell, you can rape them in the middle of a classroom and people would just cheer you on. I don't feel particularly powerful when victory is assured. See this cashew? I'm gonna eat it. HA HA HA HA HA!! I did, look at me, I am the mighty conquerer of legumes! Yeah... no.

3) What I love most about non-con is that obsessive desire that's involved. This isn't just any old person you pick up off the street, this is someone specific. Which is part of the reason why I have no interest in snuff -- once the victim is dead you can't have them anymore. If that's ok, then you never really wanted them in the first place. There's no emotional connection.

And even though none of these stories contained snuff, I really didn't get any sense of desire or attraction from the male protagonists. They enjoyed what they were doing to the girls, but not really the girls themselves. The girls were simply bodies. Which again puts the sex purely on the physical level -- and the mechanics of sex themselves are not particularly sexy to me.

4) Emotional realism is important for me to emotionally invest myself in the scenerio -- but if I thought BL manga were terrible for having rape = love scenerios and weepy ukes who whine their way into their seme's heart. Well, these hentai were much worse.

It's just as bad as BL in that the victim always cums even in situations you can't imagine a girl actually cumming in -- for example, after you've burned her cunt with hot coffee. Ouch! And she always tells you it -- loudly! That makes my head wizbang a bit. What's more most of the time she loves you for doing it afterwards. Okay, she's just not human.
