Summary: Harry is asked to feed Hagrid's new little friend, but requires a chaperon. Who do we know that loves animals and likes Harry's company? Hagrid? Yeah, well, he's not available. A short tale about taking what you can get.
Professor Snape grunted and wagged a carrot irritably. In response, the horse-like creature before him blinked and whipped its head, but seemed otherwise unenthusiastic. The two sets of bat-like wings gave a beat, and settled loosely over its sides.
"I don't think she likes you, sir," offered Harry, ever helpfully observant.
Snape spared a glance over his shoulder. "Nor did I expect her to. I am not the one who volunteered to take care of Hagrid's latest beast."
Quite sadly, Dumbledore had appointed the only available teacher to accompany Harry, when he felt it too dangerous to tend to the strange, new animal without Hagrid, who'd been sidelined by a nasty cold. Harry's affection for both gamekeeper and kept game nominated him for the job. Snape was only there by some cruel wrench of fate.
"I don't think you're supposed to feed the horse through her nose, sir."
"I bloody well know where to feed it, Potter!" He turned back to the horse. "Come on, you wretched thing, eat your damned carrot," he muttered as he attempted to shove the food between the horse's tightly-closed lips.
"'I know where to feed it, Potter!'" Harry mimicked quietly from behind the Potions master's back, with much exaggeration and hand-waggling. For good measure, he stuck a carrot up his nose and continued the pantomime.
Snape muttered something without turning around.
"What was that, sir?" Potter asked, reaching up to remove the vegetable before Snape saw. And he found that it was stuck. Harry pulled quite diligently to remove the carrot, but it would not budge.
Without having turned, Snape's shoulders shook with barely-controlled silent laughter.
The light clicked on above Harry's head even as the obstruction dangled from his left nostril.
"I believe the horse would like her other carrot now, Mr. Potter," Snape said.
End.
