seeking oil

I went to Toro Canyon Park hoping to find a way to hike Oil Canyon, but it didn't turn out.  Instead, I got exactly what I should have expected.  A few short trails around the park and no access anywhere else.  A gazebo to look out at everything from.  Picnic tables aplenty.

So I decided to see the tar seeps below the bluffs a short way further into Carpinteria.  I headed fairly directly there, stopping to sketch the workings of the pier on the way down the cliff.

A sign said the beach was closed, but it also said that was only until May 31 and it is June, so I continued on to the seeps.  They were making a globby mess of things, as usual.  Oil sheen sat on all the nearby water.  Around a few turns, I found the harbor seals, for whom the beach was closed, were hanging out still.  I turned back, then went up onto the bluff above the seals where there is a viewing point.

Hey, I'd been determined to use my watercolor book.  After wondering why the cormorants liked to hang out among the seals and watching them try to avoid the waves as the tide rose, I walked down the rest of the bluff and back to the car.
