VELOCITY COMICS NEWSLETTER: 09/15/07-09/22/07

A brittle wind blows in off the river in late summer and chases some unknowable quarry along the city streets. Streets clogged with lovers walking hand in hand, enjoying each other’s company and the fading daylight. They cling to one another to block the chill, they cling to one another to feel the warmth of another human body, to find peace in the unconditional acceptance of another person. It seems impossible to me now that I used to be one of them-walking hand in hand with someone who felt as close to me as my own flesh, someone who felt like an extension of myself. These days I can hardly remember what it was like to feel another person touch my skin. How do we get so far away from one another?
Anyway.

WEBSITE LAUNCH: For the last few months we’ve been working around the clock in the utmost secrecy-sometimes to the detriment of our personal lives-on a project that’s going to launch Velocity Comics into the 31st century. Now, THE TIME HAS COME to invite all of you to come along and join us as we RELAUNCH THE VELOCITY COMICS WEBSITE OCTOBER 1ST(ISH). The new and improved site is going to include all kinds of new interactive features including FORUMS where you can share bon mots, BLOGS where you can see what your fellow fans are talking about, and an EVENT CALENDAR to keep you in touch with the community. MORE DETAILS COMING SOON.

SALE! All Essentials, Showcases, and other black-and-white phone book sized collections are still 25% off for a limited time. This is a great opportunity to pick up a book as a gift for someone. I think that’s important- that we find little ways to show the people that matter the most to us that we appreciate them while we still can.

DRAW! WATCHMEN- Make sure you remember to vote for your favorite Watchmen drawing now on display, because voting is about to close and THE WINNER WILL BE ANNOUNCED THIS WEDNESDAY. Make somebody feel like they accomplished something AND exert your will over a chaotic world all with one vote. PLUS, don’t forget that we’re just on the verge of beginning our DRAW! BRING ON THE BAD GUYS CONTEST.

PICKS 09/19/07

GREEN ARROW/BLACK CANARY WEDDING SPECIAL- It’s funny, the way people play games with each other. These two have been dancing around making a commitment to one another for years. Why is it so much harder to fight and run than it is to let someone in, to let someone see who we really are underneath all the armor? I guess it’s because we all feel like if we do that we leave ourselves open to being completely destroyed. I know I am. But I want to believe. I want to feel like making that connection is possible. Maybe, if it’s possible for these two- then it could be possible for me and you and all of us.

JLA/HITMAN 1- Sometimes the people we care about the most have to leave us for some reason. And those reasons can be unknowable, so it’s hard to accept and let go. But what’s important is that we leave the door open for a return, if that’s the path that the road of life has in store. Tommy Monaghan is an example of that. Last seen in the final issue of HITMAN, he’s back for another adventure and he’s being brought to you the same team of Garth Ennis and John McCrea that made the HITMAN series so great.

UMBRELLA ACADEMY APOCALYPSE SUITE 1 (OF 6)- The long awaited first issue written by big-time rock star GERARD WAY of MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE. Way describes the book as “modern superhero meets Tin-Tin or European comics.” I always enjoy it when seperate entities come together and have that kind of unmistakable chemistry. It’s a rare thing these days.

STREETS OF GLORY 1- An all new Western by Garth Ennis. That should be enough.

Also Notable this week: WORLD WAR HULK 4, GUTSVILLE 2, and TALES OF SINESTRO CORPS: PARALLAX ONE SHOT

It feels like night comes earlier and earlier. Maybe it’s just the seasons changing, but there feels like there’s more to it than that.  Something that comes from deep inside of me. A sort of-quiet-comes over me most evenings. I find myself taking longer and longer walks every night, just trying to avoid the solitude of my empty apartment. Sometimes it feels like I’m looking for something out there, but I can’t name it. Would I even know it if I should come across it? Will I find whatever it is and be suddenly filled with the light of revelation, or am I doomed to wander forever gazing into the skies seeking answers and finding only the abyss?

Tom Batten.
