Busy, busy times for Velocity Comics. This summer sees our fuller expansion into CHOP SUEY 2 in Carytown after our biggest FREE COMIC BOOK DAY celebration ever, which is just one day after the opening of SPIDER-MAN 3 and the GALLERY 5 ASIAN ART SHOW in which we’re participating. And that’s just the next 7 days! Details below:
FCBD! Saturday May 5 is FREE COMIC BOOK DAY 2007. Dozens of publishers have ponied up awesome free comics that spotlight the best of their respective lines. My picks for coolest in show include offerings from Marvel (new Spidey story by alleged new creative team Dan Slott and Phil Jimenez), Dark Horse (debuting THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY by My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way), First Second (a preview of EDDIEC CAMPBELL’s new detective GN), and Image (Robert Kirkman’s new ongoing THE ASTOUNDING WOLF-MAN debuts). Doors open at 11AM, and all incoming folks get to pick 3 comics about which they’re most jazzed. And, oh yeah-20% off store-wide sale on all the non-free stuff! Lt’s make this the biggest, best FCBD yet!
EXPRESS! We’re painting, we’re hanging, and we’re stocking! Expect an announcement this week about our official Chop Suey 2/ Velocity Comics Express Carytown debut party! I’m guessing refreshments, music and good deals will all be a part of the picture.
BIRTHDAY! The lover of cake himself JAKE TUCKER had himself a birthday this past Friday. Happy birthday to him…that’s 24 spankings for anyone keeping track. Jake hasn’t put much time into the store lately as he prepares to shape the minds of tomorrow’s degenerates. Good luck, Jake!
SPIDER-MAN 3! Hey, were you aware that the new Spider-Man movie opens this Friday, 5/4/2007? You’d think the studio would spend a little money marketing the thing and get the word out, but in case you were unaware her’s the news: it’s got a character the name of “vENOM”(?) in it. Looks good. And I’ll be at the 7:30 Short Pump show with a special coupon for any Velocitypals that can find me.
GALLERY 5! GATEWAY ASIA also opens Friday, May 4. The reception runs from 7 to 11, featuring all kinds of art from Asia. Velocity will be on hand with a handsome sampling of manga, we’ll be showing a few key anime films, and having a good time overall. Stop on by!
WATCHMEN? Who’s watching them? Not as many folks as I’d like, that’s who. Entries have trailed off in recent weeks, and I wanna beef this show up, so how does upping the ante sound? Yep, I’m offering MORE than the previously mentioned $100 store credit 1st prize, as well as adding a second AND third place prize. Draw ‘em, read ‘em, love ‘em.
TOP 5 BUYS Week of 5/2/2007:
1. ALL NEW ATOM VOL 1: MY LIFE IN MINIATURE TP The first collection of the strangely great new Atom series. Entertainment Weekly called it the best new comic of 2006. I’m pretty close to agreeing.
2. HELLBOY DARKNESS CALLS #1 (OF 6) My all time fave comic returns, promising answers about Hellboy’s origins and deeper roots in the shadowy and supernatural. Legend Duncan Fegredo assists Mignola on art, and he couldn’t have found a more adept collaborator.
3. INCREDIBLE HULK #106 World War Hulk starts brewing…Hulk has a mad-on for the Illuminati that’s not going away until he gets his kill on Earth-style! See also this week: WORLD WAR HULK PROLOGUE WORLD BREAKER
4. KORGI VOL 1 TP Top Shelf debuts this new all-ages fantasy series by former Disney animator Christian Slade. It looks like a beauty along the lines of BONE and OWLY.
5. JOSS WHEDON: All of his comics come out the same week, nerds everywhere die from spasms of overstimulation. Astonishing X-Men #21, Buffy #3 and Runaways #26-yep, all arriving this week.
