So it begins: The Road to Philly Marathon

Aug 03, 2008 17:07

Today was my last semi-scripted distance run (one hour, 45 minutes at a very conservative pace), from here on in I'm on my official 16-week training schedule, which involves getting up early, eating healthy and staying in Saturday night's so I can get up at 5:30 a.m. to do my multi-hour long runs before it gets ridiculously hot.
It means no more skipping days because I'm busy, if I get home late and didn't run in the morning, I run in the dark. I'll be doing extra loads of laundry, cross-training with bicycling and yoga, spending a lot of time in my funny looking running shoes and drinking water by the gallon.

It's exciting, and a pretty serious project that's going to require some planning and commitment to balance on the line between pushing myself and hurting myself.

The race, by the way, is November 23, just a few days after my 33rd birthday. It starts at 7 a.m. and I should be done by lunchtime. I'm going to put off any sort of birthday celebration till after the fact, but I'd really  like to throw an after-the-marathon party, where I can eat some junk food, drink some beer and celebrate the occasion with some good friends and my lower legs in a bucket of ice water.

If you're around and want to show your support, I'd love people to run with (I'm slow, so it's easy) or do yoga with or whatever. I'm pretty stoked about this. Last year's goal was to get a job as a professional journalist, which I did, this year's goal is to get back to being an athlete. I'm on my way.
