The garden -- Junuary

Jun 07, 2010 20:43

The weather around here has been, shall we say, not exactly spring/summer-like. It seems like it's been raining and 55 for weeks, which doesn't make for much progress in the garden.

I'm pretty sure my tomatoes are exactly the same height they were 3 weeks ago.

However, there has been some progress! About a week ago, these appeared:

Raspberries! Hopefully before long they'll start turning red and I'll get to have a tasty snack.

Also, I've got roses in both the front and back yards. Front yard (deep pink) started blooming a week ago. Backyard (light pink) just started peeking out some color this past weekend. Both are looking pretty scrawny, so I should do some research on rose care this year so they look a bit healthier next year. (I didn't even realize they were roses until early spring).

There was a break in the weather this past Saturday (sunny! all day! temps in the 70s!), so I took full advantage. I filled the yard waste bin full with weeds and other nasties. Then with my mom's help, I filled in the gaps left by the tulips in the front yard with some annuals.

I've got white snapdragons alternating with red verbena (and some perennials I still have yet to identify). This adds some much needed color to the front. I've already gotten kudos from the woman who rides her scooter back and forth daily down the street, while smoking a cigarette. She gave me props for having a pretty yard and making her ride nicer.
