Excerpt from The Good War

I bought a sailboat last year from a doctor in Key Largo, Florida. He was German. He told me he was a prisonioner of war and had been interned. "How come you were a prisoner?" I asked. He was on a submarine. It was depth-charged and sunk. "I said, do you remember who sank you?" The Guadalcanal, he said. I said, "Oh my god, That's my old ship."
I'm buying a sailboat from him thirty eight years later. We have met the enemy and bought his boat.
