Sherlock Rec: Resurrection

Jul 06, 2013 11:43

I've been M.I.A. for too long, I know. Ever since moving in here (my new flat, new town etc.) I haven't felt the urge to update or follow my LJ very closely.
No doubt I've missed loads of brilliant fics from various fandoms because of that. But I've started to read more again, thanks to the fact that now I finally do posess a sofa to sit (or - like Sherlock - lounge) on, as well as a portable device for reading fanfics.
So, I've been trying to catch up.

And I've come across a wonderful story that I have to rec here. I haven't done recs in a while, and almost never for a Sherlock fic I think, but this one now... it needs to be known. And remembered. Although it's still a WIP (and usually I don't like reading WIP's because they almost always stop with a terrible cliffhanger and the wait is killing me every time).

Title: Resurrection
Writer: silentauror
Status of work: WIP (10 chapters now, roughly around 54.000 words)
Characters and/or pairings: Sherlock/John, background John/Mary
Rating: NC-17/Explicit
Warnings, kinks & contents: Post-Reichenbach
Author's note: Many thanks to my beta,
pandoras_chaos, as usual! (I'd be lost without my blogger beta!)

Summary: It's been three years. Can a man simply come back from the dead? (Multi-chaptered, WIP) Post-Reichenbach.

Since the summary is rather vague and doesn't do the wonderful story justice (it doesn't tell you much about what to expect, does it?)... let me tell you why I like this story so much:
  • it's a reunion fic - obviously
  • the progress of their relationship (SH/JW) from friends to lovers is done well; not too far fetched, not too drawn-out... it's just right
  • it's inexperienced!Sherlock in this (virgin!Sherlock even) and yet it doesn't dwell on that... it's simply well characterized, believeable and overall well done
  • one part made me cry. It was so heartwarming and a bit sad and wonderful at the same time. So romantic.
  • Mary is a not very likeable character in here and therefore the infidelity doesn't hurt too much (Mary may even turn out to be a villain, part of the Moran-plot... don't know yet)
  • the Moran-plot (you know, Moran - Moriarty's right hand man - the only one still alive and trying to bring Sherlock down and Sherlock and Mycroft trying to catch him, the last of Moriarty's web) is presented as a brilliant case (murders staged for Sherlock, hints and clues and all that)
There's one or two minor details I don't like about this story (no, that's too strong a phrase, it's simply things I would have liked to have differently). For one, Sherlock's and Mycroft's relationship seems to be really strained. I like it best when the brothers quarrel and argue but it's obvious that underneath it all they're family and care for each other. That doesn't seem to be the case here. Sherlock really doesn't like Mycroft.
For second, there's not enough of Mrs. Hudson. I love her and in some stories she's wonderful. There's too little of her here. And of Lestrade as well. Well, Lestrade is there but the friendship is missing. With John. And also the obvious caring for Sherlock (and vice versa) is missing, too.
On the other hand... Molly is great. That bit we saw of her at least. What she said to Sherlock at the wedding... wonderful.

So, go read that story. I linked to the first chapter on AO3.
But beware, you may want to wait for the next chapter to be posted before you start reading. Because right now it stops with a terrible cliffhanger. Seriously, the worst. It's killing me. Wait for the next part till you start reading. Or - better yet - wait till it's complete. But read it you must.
