I have responsibilities. Many, many things that I should be doing. Watching X-Files is not one one of those things. Neither is blogging about it. Well, what can you do?

Okay, we have two episodes that were awesome and two that made me want to scream. And they alternated!

I'm fairly certain that Agua Mala came about when the writers sat down and said, "Lets do an episode entirely dedicated to the greatness that is Special Agent Dana Scully." And so they did. Seriously, she fights a sea monster, pwns (I do not apologize for my internet slang) an armed radical right-winger (and I'm not talking about a lifelong Republican. I'm talking about "stockpiling weapons for the inevitable commie takeover, at which point, he will kick Red ass." A nut-job), delivers a baby, and saves Mulder. In one episode!

I really liked the way Agent Dales went from "Mulder, why did you bring this doubter along?" to "Oh my god, Mulder. You're partner is the coolest thing ever." As well he should have. More people should appreciate Scully for all the ass she kicks.

The next episode brought me crashing down. Cassandra is only a tragic figure if she doesn't totally suck at prophesying. If no one believes her because she doesn't make any sense/doesn't give anyone a reason to believe her, then it's just annoying. Seriously, if she had just told Skinner, "He's my boyfriend, I know he has a bomb, and he's dangerously unstable," it probably would have worked better than "Don't send anyone in there!" The latter just makes you look crazy. (When Mulder thinks you're nuts? You know you suck at convincing people.) Plus, I can't help but think that she could have saved everyone a lot of trouble by just shooting Bernard. I won't say "she just should have done that," because, hey, it's hard to kill someone you love, and she would have gone to jail. But it does present itself as the obvious way to save the bank full of of people. And oh my god, Bernard. A character entirely dedicated to making the dumbest possible decision at any given moment.

The other person who drove me nuts was the random screaming woman. This was partly just because she was freaking obnoxious (You know what's a bad way to prevent a unstable wacko from shooting you? Wailing "HE'S GOING TO SHOOT US!" after he has repeatably told you to shut up.) but because, on one of the Mondays, if she hadn't screamed when Mulder drew his gun, Bernard wouldn't after noticed until after he had been shot.

Speaking of Bernard being shot, why didn't Mulder or Scully just shoot him in the head after they realized that he had a bomb? Shot in the heart? Enough time to flip a switch. Shot in the head? Not so much. This episode felt like one giant idiot plot.

But Arcadia! When you start up the DVDs, little clips from the season play. I have been wanting to know what was up with smiling suburban Mulder and Scully for a long time. Plus, I have a weakness for Stepford people plots. Also, this episode was an example of a good way to do Mulder/Scully UST. Letting them be themselves, but dealing with the possibility of something more.

It's too bad that the next episode was such an example of a bad way to do Mulder/Scully UST. I am so sick of the "Scully is jealous!" plot. Why isn't it ever Mulder who's jealous of some man in Scully's life? Oh, right, because the only time Scully actually had a relationship with someone not Mulder, he tried to kill her. After all, she had to be punished for daring to have a sexuality outside waiting for her man. Ugh. Blah episode all around.

And so ends my alternating squeeing and ranting.
