Shelter from the Storm: A Kenshin/Tomoe FST
It's singles month over at fst. What that essentially means is that people are meant to post very short FSTs. When I saw the challenge, I thought "I could do that." By coincidence, I was listening to a song that had always reminded me of Kenshin and Tomoe. This little FST was born.
There's tragically no cover art, because I don't own photoshop, and if I did, I wouldn't know how to use it.
I hope I didn't fuck anything up.

When they meet, Kenshin and Tomoe are both deeply unhappy people who have closed off their hearts. Despite this, they're both kind people who, whether they know it or not, want someone to love and protect them.
The One Who Knows- Dar Williams

will be the hardest won.
I will watch you struggle long
before the answers come.
But I won't make it harder,
I'll be there to cheer you on.
I'll shine the light that guides you down
The road you're walking on.
I see this song as alternating between Kenshin and Tomoe's POVs. The first and third verses are Kenshin, the second is Tomoe, and the chorus is both of them.
This is a song for Kenshin and Tomoe as they grow closer. She decides to become his "sheath," he dedicates himself to protecting her.

The most upbeat song on this FST. A song for Kenshin and Tomoe while they live together in Otsu. There's chaos and death all around them, but they're safe and happy in their little mountain cottage. But nothing so peaceful can last...
Where Time Stands Still- Mary Chapin-Carpenter
Your smile a fitting, final gesture
Wish I could have loved you better

I remember like a lover can
But I forget it like a leaver will
It's the first time that you held my had
It's the smell and the taste and the fear and the thrill

And all the things I never will
Kenshin holds Tomoe as she lies dying from the wound he inflicted. She's smiling, and he can't understand why.
Cedar Tree- Indigo Girls
i dig a well
i dig it deep
and for my only love
i plant a cedar tree
the best
the best we ever had
The required Indigo Girls song. This was chosen more for the sound than for the lyrics; the melody seems full of old love and remembrance. But the lyrics work as well. Kenshin may not have literally planted something, but he'll always honor her memory with his vow not to kill.
(Note: Of course, we know that Tomoe wouldn't be Kenshin's only love, but I'm sure at the time it didn't feel like that.)
