Wow, okay, I guess it's been over a full year since I mucked about on Livejournal.  Wild..  I can only assume those who are still watching me have either moved onto Tumblr (WHICH I CAN'T- IDGI EVERYTHING IS SO CONFUSING AND I'M OLD) or forgot ( Read more... )

Congratulations on graduating and the recognition! *exciiited* XDDDDD *sparkle fingers*

I can't really seem to get into Tumblr either, and your assessment that it's not very community-like is pretty spot on. It's a bit like Twitter, where you just yell into the void and then hope someone retweets you. There's this added level of desperation in this sort of communication, like you're yelling at an unruly crowd: LISTEN TO MEEE! PPLEAAASE!!!?!

Also, people rarely comment, you'll get reposted a million times and there will be like 10 comments of varying derpiness that will hardly span a sentence.

Fandom-wise, I think it sort of hurts it too. Because god knows the Avengers fandom would have/should have blown up if it was on lj, but it's just kind of really scattered right now and none of the good art or fics are consolidated. And you have to hunt down dozens of rec posts with only 5 things listed on them. Thanks guys, that's... that's real helpful...~_~

Also, how the hell do you run a big bang or exchange on tumblr? You can't, that would be banana-pants.

lj -I think- had some drama go down last year? I never bothered to figure out what it was, but I know a lot of people are moving house over to dreamwidth. However, at the same time, a lot of people don't want to leave lj due to archival history, so now everyone's half-straddling both. It's weird. One day, in the distant future, this will be called the fandom diaspora or something.

(off topic: living in the Mission now. If you're bored and up in SF, email/call me! We'll get ice cream and throw chips at hipsters from the balcony or something... )

Thanks Vivi-chwan~!

Man that's pretty much what I gleaned from it. It's not that I think communities have to be this sequestered away place where you have to like, introduce yourself to get in and get to know everyone and do all this membership stuff (not that you usually had to on LJ either), but it also seems like on Tumblr its too easy for a tag to get contentious or clogged with some just tangentially related junk just because someone threw the right tag onto their post and now, boom, I'm looking at something I didn't really care about. And then on top of which, it seems hard to just have a conversation with someone unless you fiddle around in the Ask Box or something..? Everything just seems so much simpler on LJ, or at least I've been around it so long that my tastes and expectations of the fandom experience are pretty much tailored to LJ..

(not to mention the fuckery going on with uncredited art; sure you can post uncredited stuff on LJ too, but it seems like Tumblr made it so fast and easy to do it that it happens WAY too much. I know lots of people on Tumblr don't like it either and make it a point to make sure the artist gets their due, but that certainly hasn't endeared Tumblr to me either)

Ffff gyeesh, has anyone ever tried to do an exchange like that on tumblr before?? It seems like it'd be nightmarish.

I do remember that, I seem to remember it had something to do with LJ's new terms of service and people didn't like that? Or that was how I saw it explained. I haven't seen that it's made any difference in the content placed on LJ (if that s what it was all about; my memory is sketchy) except that people who WOULD OTHERWISE be posting on LJ are more scattered between LJ and DW?

(Ahhh that sounds great! I'm not in SF too much, although I'm testing for some jobs up there right now. Maybe we can plan a day of it or something. I hear there's supposed to be an awesome ice cream place in SF with weird favors or whatever?)

Ug, don't get me started on that, they make it so easy these days to just take other people's shit. The two perpetrators of this that are also really bad are Facebook and Reddit. To make things worse you also you hear this pathetic attention whoring blurb like, "my gurlfriend doesn't think she's very good at art, what do you guys think?!" *insert stolen art*

I bet all the artists who have had this happen to them think: 'I wish I could set you on fire through my monitor.'

> LJ's new terms of service...

Ug, every time someone else buys LJ out, they're subject to the host country's laws, which is what happened last time when they were bought by Six Apart and everyone was suddenly subjected to Australian laws.

Yeah! :D Just give me a poke (uh, except Wed...I go to a model class on Wed.). There is definitely weird ice cream near us, I've had: earl grey, creme fraiche, balsamic strawberry, snickerdoodles, etc.
