  • 18:28:22: I assume I can talk about this now: if you love animation do yourself a favor and go see Tangled. Character animation = top notch. SERIOUSLY.
    • Also it's the first in a long time that I can remember Disney having a *funny* heroine we could laugh with (and at XD). Rapunzel is adorbs.
    • @taconaco I love it when the hero is an ARTEEST :D (Man she was ( Read more... )

It was a sweet little romp through classic!Disney-fairytale land ^_^ I'm still kinda burned about how they chose to market the movie (even after the movie's been released, I see they're still cobbling together new "See it now!" trailers that are all Flynn and maybe one shot of Rapunzel being pretty) but sure enough, the movie is all Rapunzel's show, and she is the cutest.

And really kind of refreshing in her own ways, since I think that the Disney tradition is mostly a kind of "noble" mold or something kind of static feeling, whereas Rapunzel is.. really rather goofy sometimes, and funny, and overdramatic, and quite unapologetically girly (I don't know why but with the marketing trend of GIRLY THINGS ARE BAD I really enjoyed that).

And then of course it's probably the most physical comedy-based animated film I've seen in a long time, which I love to little bits. I'd say your guy friend wouldn't have any trouble enjoying that, but.. well, it's a pretty classic Disney movie in other ways, and I'm a big old romantic sap but even I was kinda ehhhh when it started veering that way... But even so, it's worth the watch. Just to see how far Disney's 3D animation has come. *sniffle* It was like watching their lush traditional animated films, only with the kind of detail only 3D rigs can provide...

Aw man, that sounds like so much fun. I'm just like you with being a sucker for the romantic nonsense that Disney does, although I think they did it best in that one decade of awesomeness. Heh, I'm actually watching 'Beauty and the Beast' on TV at this moment, and man, it's weird to see some classic 2D after the push of 3D lately. =P

And I'd like to say that I'm completely surprised that 'Chuck', aka Zachary Levi, is the voice of Flynn! (They're doing sneak peaks of 'Tangled' and there he was) I was not expecting that after only watching the trailers. Hmmm, that may be the real reason my guy friend thinks he can handle the movie--he loves that TV show.

Btw, thanks for the soundtrack offerings! I'll have to check that out.

Yeah, I don't think they'll ever beat the Disney Renaissance (that decade you're talking about), which began with The Little Mermaid and I think ended with Tarzan. That was their prime, in terms of balancing story and songs and marketability with great animation and design. Not that I haven't liked things about stuff they've done since then (hello Lilo and Stitch!) but I guess the Disney Renaissance was the beginning and end of everything working in their classic format...

I hate to do that 'guys will like this because this movie has a guy he will relate to' thing, but if your friend's a Chuck fan, he probably will like Flynn's early-mid movie antics. His character arc is full of goofy antics and horse rivalry. Like. Ridiculous duking it out with a furious equine. It's great :)

Is it actually referred to as the "Disney Renaissance" or is that a phrase of your making? Because it truly does fit that era and it's a shame that it was over too quickly. But eh, I think Pixar took over where Disney left off. =P

Haha, when I think of 'Lilo and Stitch', I can't help but to think about Disneyland and them modifying the Aliens 'ride' (not certain what else to call it... attraction?) into Lilo and Stitch oriented. It's hilarious with Stitch running about, especially when you know how it was originally designed to scare the shit out of people. ;)

Heh, my mother actually mentioned being interested in seeing 'Tangled', and this is a woman who only endured cartoons for her children. Her reason for wanting to see 'Tangled'--the horse. She thought it was hilarious with them bumping shoulders. Alas, she's in another state, otherwise I'd drag her to the movie.

It's actually called that, though I don't know if that was coined by the Disney studio or by animation afficionados. But yeah, I think Pixar started up with their first major feature films kind of in the last few dying gasps of the Disney Renaissance (memory insists it was somewhere around Hunchback of Notre Dame, which to this day is still my favorite, and Hercules). And then everyone was like, "Hey, this is AMAZING and it's making money, which means... audiences only want 3D now!" Instead of, you know, thinking it might be about quality story and characters and originality and all that.

I didn't know they did that with Disneyland!! Aw, I'm missing out on all the cool Disneyland shenanigans D: (I'll finally be going back there for the first time since the Indiana Jones ride came out, right after this New Year! *squee*) That's amazing and hilarious. And.. I didn't know they had an Aliens ride O_O

The horse Maximus is hilarious. I'm usually kinda eh on animal sidekicks, but Max and Pascal the chameleon are pretty quality buddies ^_^

*pout* Dang it, but I like Pixar too much for me to be mad at them for starting the wave into the 3D madness.

Heh, I have a pair of friends who are complete Disney freaks, which means I have done Disneyland and Disney World several times with them over the past decade. She works for Frontier, aka free flights, so she goes almost once a month while the husband goes only four or fives times a year. Yes, only. He'd do more if he could. =P But yeah, the Aliens thing has been there for years in Tomorrow Land (and sorry, apparently not "Aliens" based since the movies were rated R and therefore not Disney appropriate; it was called Alien Encounter). It's not a ride, per se, rather more of a theater type seating and 'things happen'. My favorite is Stitch running away and the shoulder restraints bounce to simulate him jumping over you. Back for the alien version, that was something to scare you in blackout conditions, and thus making it even funnier for Stitch.

And y'know, even if it's been a while since you have done Disneyland, the classics are still the best. My favorites are Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise, Indy, and Pirates (although the PotC movie additions are little weird...). Peter Pan is also a fav, but the lines are usually killer for that one. Of course, I enjoy most of the rides for all of the little details they have placed into each attraction. It really is amazing when you think about what they have done.

Edit: And wow, I fail--Stitch is at Disney World. I swore there was one in Disneyland, but I must have gotten confused with the similarities between the two parks.

Oh I loves me some Pixar, and apparently even they weren't happy about the "death of 2D" being attributed to them. And really, it wasn't Pixar's fault they were making quality pictures--it was pretty much everyone else's for assuming it was just the medium that was the winning formula, and not.. like, everything else Pixar was doing right ^_^;;

Eeee, I can't wait to go back! I went through this whole high school thing where I was like.. too cool or some shit for Disneyland cuz I was into anime and it was mature and blah blah blah. And now I'm 25 and just want to frolic like a jackass through a children's theme park because OMG YAY DISNEYLAND DISNEYLAND DISNEYLAND XD So it's been like a decade since I've gone back, and I'm looking forward to the classics just as much as the new stuff that I haven't seen before ^__^

Aww, that's too bad. I would've been so up for a Stitch-featuring ride! Then again I guess there's California Adventures too (which wasn't even around the last time I went) sooo tradeoff :)
